If the United States and Iran can return to the negotiating table after escalation, why can’t India and Pakistan? Dialogue remains the only viable path to resolving issues. That was the context of my remarks at Jama Masjid, and they should be understood accordingly : Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

.Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Expresses Deep Concern Over Unrest Across LoC, Calls for Dialogue, Inclusive Engagement and Respect for Rights Srinagar, July 31, 2026: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr. Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq, while addressing the Friday congregation at the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar, expressed deep concern over the continuing unrest and tragic loss of lives across the Line of Control, particularly in Rawalakot. Mirwaiz said “Today, as we gather in prayer, our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters on the other side of the Line of Control. We are deeply anguished by the continuing unrest and the tragic loss of precious lives during the past month and a half. Reports indicate that dozens of people have been killed, while some accounts place the cumulative toll even higher. The truth must be established through a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation. We mourn every life lost—whether that of a civilian protester or a member of the police force—and pray for the speedy recovery of all those injured. May Allah grant patience and strength to the bereaved families and guide those entrusted with authority towards justice, wisdom and restraint. The recent events across the Line of Control, particularly in Rawalakot, remind us that governments may administer territories and advance competing political positions, but it is the people of Jammu and Kashmir who remain the true stakeholders of their homeland. The governments administering the two sides of the Line of Control each claim to act in the interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, yet the people themselves must remain at the centre of every decision affecting their future. We are one people, bound together by history, family, culture and our common State Subject identity. Whether we live in Srinagar, Muzaffarabad, Birmingham or elsewhere across the world, we remain one people. The Line of Control has divided the territory, but not our families, our shared history or our collective stake in our destiny. We therefore appeal to the Government of Pakistan and the local Government across the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir to engage sincerely with the representatives of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and with all sections of the people. Durable peace and stability can only be achieved through dialogue, constitutional fairness and respect for the rights and dignity of every segment of society. At the same time, any genuine people’s movement must itself remain inclusive. It cannot advance the rights of one section of the people while questioning or diminishing the constitutional rights of another. The voting rights and constitutional status of nearly three million Kashmiri refugees and migrants living across the provinces of Pakistan should not become a matter of political bargaining or exclusion. Their rights form an integral part of the collective rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and deserve equal respect and protection. Both sides should therefore strive to find a fair and mutually acceptable middle ground to address this important issue. Our struggle has always been one for justice, dignity, human rights and the political rights of the entire people of Jammu and Kashmir across regions and ethnicities, including minorities. That struggle can only retain its moral strength if it embraces every Kashmiri without distinction, living on either side of the Line of Control or in the wider diaspora. On this blessed Friday, let us pray for peace, justice, reconciliation and unity among our people. Let us pray that wisdom prevails over confrontation, dialogue over violence, and inclusiveness over division. May Allah guide all governments and leaders to uphold the rights, dignity and welfare of every son and daughter of Jammu and Kashmir. Ameen.”

.Mirwaiz Umar Farooq addresses the Friday congregation at Jama Masjid Srinagar Srinagar, November 14, 2025 : Addressing the Friday congregation at the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar, Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Molvi Umar Farooq said that the recent bomb blast in New Delhi in which 12 people going about their daily life lost their live, and scores sustained gruesome injuries is very sad and painful. Such incidents shock and shake up humans. But it is extremely unfortunate that such tragedies are exploited even before facts are established, with the hype and drama created around them by the media with the help of ‘inside sources’, that feeds into a narrative eager to immediately associate it with a particular religion or community, and criminalise them. Due to this our children and youth studying and working in cities and states across India overnight become suspect, fearing for their safety, while it creates anxiety among people here. Mirwaiz said that I, and all the political and religious organisations that I am a part of, have always condemned acts of violence and terror. People of Kashmir are the first to empathise with victims when such incidents occur as they understand the pain caused by such incidents from their own experience of decades. What happened in Delhi, No cause, however right can justify it. No religion can permit it. For me dialogue — talking and listening to each other with respect — is the best way to resolve issues and build bridges . I have also repeatedly said that the pulpit of Jama Masjid places upon me the responsibility of speaking for the people. And the people of Kashmir are distressed and disempowered. While the larger issue remains unaddressed, even the autonomy constitutionally given by the Govt of India to the people of J&K, was snatched in August 2019 when it was downgraded to a Union Territory, and people’s land and job rights taken from them. Immediately their vulnerability and fear of demographic change was real upon them, curtailment of all freedom of expression, constant surveillance, fear of arbitrary dismissals from service and attachment of land and properties, constant raids and arrests by investigative agencies, compounded by daily issues of rising unemployment among the youth and shrinking job avenues due to removal of 35A and a discriminating reservation policy have all together created a situation that has aggravated the sense of hopelessness and resentment. It is my request to the authorities at the helm of affairs and decision making, to seriously relook at their approach of dealing with the people of Jammu and Kashmir only through the prism of security and law and order, and instead as late Vajpayee ji once said from the “dayira of insaniyat and jamhooriyat“. Of course it’s for them to pay heed to it or to ignore . As for us, hoping for the better and faith in Almighty is our imaan.

Any attempt to change the important days in Islamic calendar of J&K like during the month of Rabiul awal recently will be strongly resisted by the people .The attempt to politicise this religious issue will not be accepted by the Muslims of J&K. He also sought answers from the J&K administration as to why the historic Jamia Masjid is closed on important religious occasion including Shab-e-Qadr, Rabi-ul Awal, Jumat-ul-Vida etc. “Cant you see how people of Kashmir cooperate in the religious festivals of other communities. Don’t you see how we cooperate to make Amarnath Yatra a grand success? Why is Jamia being locked and prayers disallowed when it is Islamic occasion? | #Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir

.Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Flags “Larger Reality” in J&K While Addressing Friday Congregation at Jama Masjid Raises Concern Over Alleged Encounter in Ganderbal, Calls for Accountability Says Continuous Crackdown by NIA, SIA, CIK, ACB Creating Atmosphere of Fear Srinagar, April 3, 2026: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr. Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq, while speaking at the Friday congregation at Jama Masjid Srinagar, said: “After a long time, I stand before you at Jama Masjid. Access to this central place of worship for the Muslims of Kashmir is repeatedly curtailed at the will of authorities. Eid prayer was denied, as were many Fridays during Ramazan, including the sacred night and day of shab-e-Qadr and Juma-tul-Vida. Such repeated restrictions are not just about closing a mosque, they speak of the larger reality, when “normalcy” is tom tomed by curbing people’s fundamental rights through bans, bars and censorship. Unfortunately the harassment of Kashmiri’s is unceasing. As the deeply distressing news reports of the killing of a young man, Raashid Ahmed Mughal, at Arhama, Ganderbal in a claimed encounter came yesterday, his family saying that he was a part-time computer operator with no links to militancy who was picked up and killed in cold blood, painful memories of such encounters got revived. His family seeks justice through an impartial probe. We can only hope that justice is done as past experiences do not inspire confidence. But let us hope that, as news came that LG sahib himself has ordered an inquiry, this time justice gets done and those responsible are held to account and punished. That his body was also not given to the family for burial is inhuman and condemnable. Then almost daily there are reports in newspapers of cases, chargesheets and arrests of Kashmiri’s by the multiple agencies operating here SIA, CIK, Cyber Cell, ACB, NIA, on one ground or another. This creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation and reinforces the narrative that portrays an entire people as dangerous and suspect to be kept under check. This coercive policy cannot build viable peace or lead to progress if that is what the authorities seek, as they claim.”
