Some days ago, historian Ruchika Sharma wrote on X: “Savarna does not merely mean upper caste. It means sa-varna, the good varna. There’s a clear value judgment here that some varnas are good varnas and some are ku-varna, the bad varna.” Is this claim correct? Not at all. Ruchika Sharma’s baseless claim is completely false. She has confused the prefix ‘sa’ for ‘su’ and falsely assumed that ‘sa’ means “good”, ‘savarṇa’ means “good varṇa”, and its opposite is ‘kuvarṇa’. The historian has displayed a profound ignorance of Indian languages in general and Sanskrit in particular.

New publication I am pleased to announce that my paper on foreign policy in ancient India has been published in the latest edition of IIMB Management Review, the peer-reviewed quarterly journal of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, as part of its special issue on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). This publication is special, as the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore is my alma mater. The article covers ‘ṣāḍguṇya’, the six-fold foreign policy of ancient India, in the light of the Arthaśāstra and other works on Nīti (strategy) and highlights some examples of Ṣāḍguṇya policies from modern times. धोबी का कुत्ता अथवा धोबी का कुतका? कुछ बरसों से बार-बार अनेक लोगों द्वारा कहा जा रहा है “धोबी का कुत्ता न घर का न घाट का” कहावत ठीक नहीं है, और सच्ची कहावत है “धोबी का कुतका न घर का न घाट का”। कई लोकप्रिय हिन्दीभाषी अभिनेता और पत्रकार भी डटकर यह कह चुके हैं, जिससे अनेक लोग इस बात को मानने लगे हैं। सच यह है “धोबी का कुत्ता न घर का न घाट का” ही सच्ची कहावत है। हितोपदेश में एक धोबी के कुत्ते की कथा आती है और सम्भवतः यह कहावत वहीं से आई है। सोलहवीं/सत्रहवीं शताब्दी में गोस्वामी तुलसीदास ने कवितावली में “धोबी कै सो कूकर न घर को न घाट को” ऐसा प्रयोग किया है। सत्रहवीं शताब्दी में निपट निरंजन ने अपने काव्य में “धोबी का कुत्ता रहा, घर का न घाट का” ऐसा प्रयोग किया है। “धोबी का कुत्ता न घर का न घाट का” के विविध रूपों के अनेक पुस्तकों और कोशों में प्रमाण हैं। इसके विपरीत “धोबी का कुतका न घर का न घाट का” ऐसी कहावत न किसी ऐताहिसिक साहित्यिक कृति में है और न किसी कोश में। ऐसी कहावत कभी थी ही नहीं, यह केवल सामाजिक संचार शोधशाला (Social Media Research Institute) और काहो विश्वविद्यालय (WhatsApp University) की उपज है।

Historian Romila Thapar recently stated that Buddhists and Jains were called ‘mleccha’ in Brāhmaṇical sources. This is incorrect. Brāhmaṇical, Buddhist and Jain sources used the word ‘mleccha’ for foreigners, barbarians or speakers of non-Indo-Aryan languages. Watch for more.
