Pope Leo explained the reason for his trip to Turkey today. Speaking on the plane he said: “this particular trip to Turkey and to Lebanon has, as you know, first of all, the very meaning of unity celebrating 1700 years from the Council of Nicaea” “I very much have been looking forward to this trip because of what it means for all Christians. But it's also a great message to the whole world and in a special way, with the presence of myself, of the Church, of believers in both Turkey and in Lebanon. We hope to also announce, transmit and proclaim how is important peace throughout the world. And to invite all people to come together to search for greater unity, greater harmony, and to look for the ways that all men and women can truly be brothers and sisters. In spite of differences, in spite of different religions, in spite of different beliefs, that we are all brothers and sisters, and to hopefully be a part of promoting peace, unity throughout the world.” Video credit: franca giansoldati /Il Messaggero

JUST IN: Pope Leo XIV comments on US & Venezuela, saying Venezuelan people must be prioritized — “It is with deep concern that I am following the developments in Venezuela. The good of the beloved Venezuelan people must prevail over every other consideration. This must lead to the overcoming of violence, & to the pursuit of paths of justice & peace, guaranteeing the sovereignty of the country, ensuring the rule of law enshrined in its Constitution, respecting the human and civil rights of each & every person, & working together to build a peaceful future of cooperation, stability & harmony, with special attention to the poorest who are suffering because of the difficult economic situation. I pray for all this, & I invite you to pray too, entrusting our prayer to the intercession of Our Lady of Coromoto, & to Saints José Gregorio Hernández & Carmen Rendiles.”

JUST IN: Pope Leo SIV issues urgent plea for peace in Middle East & Iran, warning about risk of an “irreparable chasm” “I am following with deep concern what is happening in the Middle East and Iran in these dramatic moments. Peace is not built with threat and arms which will only result in destructions and death, but only through reasonable dialogue that is also authentic and responsible. Let us call on the parties involved to take up the moral responsibility and end the spiral of violence before it becomes an irreparable chasm. May diplomacy recover its role so it can promote the good of peoples and promote peace founded on justice. We continue to pray for peace.”
