Michael celebrated his 21st birthday and the release of his groundbreaking Off the Wall album that debuted just two and a half weeks prior on this date in 1979 at the legendary New York City nightclub, Studio 54. Around the same time MJ’s contract with his father and manager expired allowing MJ to take full independent control of his career. MJ mingled with disco era icons and family members surrounded by a huge Bday cake and balloons. MJ frequently visited Studio 54 and love the atmosphere “It’s where you come when you want to escape.. it’s escapism.. when you dance here you’re free.” he once said.
