In a recent interview actor Tony Cox broke down his experience working with Michael Jackson as Hooter on the Captain EO short film. MJ was a full on prankster, he kept coming over during improv, laughing, and getting Tony in trouble with Francis Ford Coppola then later hit him with the classic trick pen prank that had the whole room cracking up 😂😂 He even invited Tony over to the house to teach him the Moonwalk. Pure Thrad Era MJ energy from the Friday and Bad Santa legend. 🎥 The Art of Dialogue

50 years ago today, the Jacksons dropped “Enjoy Yourself” their first single after leaving Motown, co produced by Gamble & Huff, with Michael and Jackie on lead vocals and Randy officially in the lineup. A Philly soul/funk that peaked at #6 on the hot 100 and #2 on the R&B charts, later certified platinum. The message is still airtight 50 years later: stop staring into space worrying about what you can’t control, let yourself go and enjoy the night while the music is running hot. Some advice never expires 🕺🏽🔥

Quincy Jones asked for a song called “Pretty Young Thing.” Michael handed him a mid tempo late night groove that sounds like it belongs on Off the Wall but Quincy wanted something faster. James Ingram wrote a completely different song that kept the “P.Y.T” title and became the Thriller hit. This demo version sat in the vault until 2004. No tenderoni, no chant, just MJ singing like he’s telling you a secret At 3 a.m. Two songs, same three letters and two different moods, the one they left off still slaps 🔥🔥

Jennifer Love Hewitt remembering the day she showed up at 10 years old for a L.A Gear commercial thinking she would be working with “some kid named Michael” only to meet the real Michael Jackson. He taught her his signature toe stand, she high fived Bubbles and MJ advised her to never lose the desire to do good for others then quietly sent a check in her name to a charity she was apart of. Then later came visits to Neverland including Thanksgiving. This is one of those rare stories that feel like pure childhood magic.

38 years ago today, MTV premiered Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” short film. White suit, fedora, 1930s club and that anti gravity lean that still looks like pure magic. Directed by Colin Chilvers and built as the centerpiece of MJ’s Moonwalker anthology it pays homage to The Band Wagon starring Fred Astaire, while giving the world one of MJ’s most quintessential visual moments. Thirty Eight years later, Annie’s still not okay and neither is anyone who tries to recreate that lean without the proper gear.

54 years ago today Sonny and Cher introduced a kid who had already sold millions of records and still looks like he should be at home doing homework. The Jackson 5 walked onto the stage liked they already owned Friday Night TV and tore through “Looking Through The Windows,” and then 14 year old Michael performed “Ben” and variety tv never recovered.

One of only two times that Michael performed “You Rock My World” live during the 30th Anniversary Celebration on this date in 2001, the new song from Invincible at the time with full stage production, dancers locked in, that unmistakable command of the room and special onstage appearances by Usher and Chris Tucker. Twenty five years later the footage still hits like it just dropped. This is what it looks like when the King was still introducing new material to a packed house that already knew every move. MJ’s reaction to Chris Tucker kicking with the wrong leg always takes me out 😂😂

57 years ago today, five brothers from Gary, Indiana stepped onto ABCs Hollywood Palace for their first national TV appearance and rewrote the rules of television. Diana Ross introduced an 11 year old Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5, they opened with “Sing a Simple Song,” slid into “Can You Remember,” then dropped their brand new Motown hit “I Want You Back.” In a few electric minutes, the kid with the voice and moves announced that music’s next chapter had arrived. History didn’t just happen that night it sang and danced.
