In a recent interview actor Tony Cox broke down his experience working with Michael Jackson as Hooter on the Captain EO short film. MJ was a full on prankster, he kept coming over during improv, laughing, and getting Tony in trouble with Francis Ford Coppola then later hit him with the classic trick pen prank that had the whole room cracking up 😂😂 He even invited Tony over to the house to teach him the Moonwalk. 50 years ago today, the Jacksons dropped “Enjoy Yourself” their first single after leaving Motown, co produced by Gamble & Huff, with Michael and Jackie on lead vocals and Randy officially in the lineup. A Philly soul/funk that peaked at #6 on the hot 100 and #2 on the R&B charts, later certified platinum. The message is still airtight 50 years later: stop staring into space worrying about what you can’t control, let yourself go and enjoy the night while the music is running hot. Quincy Jones asked for a song called “Pretty Young Thing.” Michael handed him a mid tempo late night groove that sounds like it belongs on Off the Wall but Quincy wanted something faster. 38 years ago today, MTV premiered Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” short film. White suit, fedora, 1930s club and that anti gravity lean that still looks like pure magic. Directed by Colin Chilvers and built as the centerpiece of MJ’s Moonwalker anthology it pays homage to The Band Wagon starring Fred Astaire, while giving the world one of MJ’s most quintessential visual moments. Thirty Eight years later, Annie’s still not okay and neither is anyone who tries to recreate that lean without the proper gear.

One of only two times that Michael performed “You Rock My World” live during the 30th Anniversary Celebration on this date in 2001, the new song from Invincible at the time with full stage production, dancers locked in, that unmistakable command of the room and special onstage appearances by Usher and Chris Tucker. Twenty five years later the footage still hits like it just dropped. This is what it looks like when the King was still introducing new material to a packed house that already knew every move. 57 years ago today, five brothers from Gary, Indiana stepped onto ABCs Hollywood Palace for their first national TV appearance and rewrote the rules of television. Diana Ross introduced an 11 year old Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5, they opened with “Sing a Simple Song,” slid into “Can You Remember,” then dropped their brand new Motown hit “I Want You Back.” In a few electric minutes, the kid with the voice and moves announced that music’s next chapter had arrived. History didn’t just happen that night it sang and danced.

25 years ago today, Weeks after September 11th, Michael Jackson led the United We Stand benefit at RFK stadium in Washington, D.C. and ask a grieving nation: What More Can I Give⁉️ In a silver eagle emblazoned jacket MJ closed the night with the live performance of the charity anthem that he wrote for the victims joined by an all star cast including Mariah Carey, Usher, *NSYNC and many more. In a heartfelt speech he urged the crowd to look each other in the eyes, join hands, and reach for the heavens, telling the families of the fallen: “You are not alone. You are in our hearts, you are in our thoughts and you are in our prayers.”
