Six men started vomiting while filming The Odyssey. Christopher Nolan approached with a camera and asked: “Is it ok we shoot?” During the 2025 production, the cast filmed on the open ocean aboard real ships, including the wooden longship Draken. They learned to row and raise its sails, working alongside professional sailors dressed as extras. Then, on one rough day, the swell and wind created a wave pattern that left six men severely seasick, according to Matt Damon. They were leaning over the side, throwing up. They gave Nolan permission to film. He used the footage in scenes showing Odysseus’s devastated crew after an encounter at sea. Their distress was real. Nolan later described that miserable day as producing some of his favourite shots in the film. The ocean also provided an unexpected moment, dolphins playing in the waves beside the ship. Nolan captured them with Damon looking out over the rough sea, a shot he said many viewers assumed was CGI.

In July 2014, Lars Mittank, a 28-year-old from Germany went on a vacation with his five of friends to Varna, Bulgaria. The week went by really fast," said Paul Rohmann, one of Mittank’s friends. However, the day before the group was scheduled to fly back home, Lars got in a fight with other German nationals at a bar. The fight stemmed from a disagreement over football. Lars was absent for most of the evening but reappeared at his hotel the next morning, recounting to his friends that he had been assaulted by a group of four men, resulting in injuries to his jaw and a ruptured eardrum. Afterwards, Lars visited a doctor who recommended against flying due to his injury. Additionally, the doctor prescribed an antibiotic for him. Despite his friends' desire to stay with him, he insisted he could manage alone. He encouraged them to stick to the initial travel schedule and fly home on July 7, which they did. Lars checked out of the hotel with his friends and then checked into a new hotel. But this is where things turn really strange. The day following his friends' departure, Lars displayed odd and paranoid behavior. From his hotel, he contacted his mother, Sandra Mittank, speaking in hushed tones, expressing fears that individuals were attempting to harm or rob him. He also urged her to cancel his credit cards. The CCTV in the hotel captured him pacing up and down the halls, looking out windows, and hiding in an elevator. Around 1 am, he departed from the hotel and came back approximately an hour later. His whereabouts during this time remain unknown. In the morning, he once again called his mother, telling her that the people pursuing him were getting closer. Lars arrived at Varna Airport on July 8, 2014, the day he intended to board his flight back to Germany. He sought advice from the airport doctor, Dr. Kosta Kostov, who later characterized his demeanor as "nervous and erratic." According to Kostov, he told Mittank that he was fine and could return home. Lars also expressed concerns about the medication he was taking. Shortly after, a construction worker entered the office, causing Lars to exclaim, "I don't want to die here. I have to get out of here." He abruptly fled the office, abandoning his luggage containing his wallet, cell phone, and passport. These final moments of Lars Mittank can be observed in the CCTV footage provided below. Upon exiting the airport, he can be observed in the footage jogging away from the airport, scaling a fence, and bolting into a meadow. Following this, he completely disappeared.

In November 1996, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 was hijacked by three Ethiopian men just 20 minutes after takeoff. The men stormed the cockpit and hijacked the aircraft, wielding an axe and a fire extinguisher taken from the cockpit. The hijackers were identified as two unemployed high school graduates and a nurse. They demanded that the plane be flown to Australia so they could seek asylum in the country. The captain attempted to explain that they only had enough fuel for the scheduled flight and thus could not even make a quarter of the way to Australia, but the hijackers did not believe him. They declared in Amharic, French, and English that if anyone tried to interfere, they had a bomb and would use it to blow up the plane. Authorities later determined that the supposed bomb was actually a covered bottle of liquor. Instead of flying towards Australia, the captain flew along the African coastline. The hijackers noticed that land was still visible and forced the pilot to steer east. However, the captain secretly headed for the Comoros Islands. The plane was nearly out of fuel but the hijackers continued to ignore the captain’s warnings. Out of options, the captain began to circle the area, hoping to land the plane at the Comoros’ main airport. However, he was forced to ditch the plane, crashing into the Indian Ocean at approximately 200 miles per hour. Of the 175 passengers and staff members from the flight, only 50 occupants survived.

Video footage captures Daniel Victor Jones picking up his gun just moments before he took his own life on live TV. The incident occurred on a Los Angeles freeway in 1998. On Thursday, April 30, 1998, 40-year-old Jones parked his Toyota pickup truck on the LA highway. He started pointing a loaded shotgun at passing cars on the freeway, prompting motorists to alert the police. Jones unfurled a large, square banner with white handlettering that read: "HMO's are in it for the money!! Live free, love safe or die." He had prepared the banner specifically for the occasion and displayed it for the news helicopters to see. As authorities prepared to negotiate with him, Jones abruptly returned to his truck and sat in the driver's seat. With the intention of ending his life, he ignited a Molotov cocktail inside his truck, causing it to burst into flames and become engulfed in fire. Moments later, he picked up his shotgun and fatally shot himself. Jones carried this act out on live TV as a form of protest towards health maintenance organizations after he had been diagnosed as HIV-positive several months earlier.

Video of Harry R. Truman after he refused to evacuate Mount St. Helens, insisting, "They'll never get me off this mountain." The 83-year-old had lived beside Spirit Lake for more than 50 years and ignored repeated evacuation orders as the volcano showed clear signs it was about to erupt. When Mount St. Helens exploded on 18 May 1980, Truman, his lodge, and his 16 cats were buried beneath an estimated 150 feet of volcanic debris, and none of their remains were ever recovered.

Galifianakis recalled around 30 takes, with Tyson’s fist passing so close he could feel it against his beard. He had to keep looking Tyson in the eye and act surprised each time. “Well, if this is the way that I die, it’s gonna be a really funny funeral,” he remembered thinking. In a 2012 interview, Tyson said his drug use affected his speech and believed the cast must have noticed. He credited them with supporting him through that period, and welcoming him back for the sequel.
