Another one from the archives. Here when they talk about “it” they are talking about male violence. Peter Boghossian compares the risk to women of male violence to that of marauding elephants. The entire women’s movement, since early temperance and prostitution abolition campaigns, have been centred on getting the state to protect women from male violence and to empower women to remove themselves and their children from male violence. This was at the centre also of equal pay campaigns and sexual harassment legislation. To suggest to a feminist that she is not taking steps to protect herself from male violence is bizarre. This, I pointed out at the time is extremely individualistic (Boghossian then called me a collectivist). Feminism is about establishing a societal and legal system where women don’t have to rely on familial males to protect themselves from male violence (patriarchy). Patriarchy is a system heavily dependent on benevolence. If your familial males are good, life can be ok, if your familial males are evil, life is hell. We don’t have any infrastructure to protect Peter from marauding elephants because marauding elephants are not a daily risk to him and male violence is a daily risk to women. You have to ask what interest Peter has in taking this stance? Kara Dansky

The ideal subject for the regime is not a fanatic, but a person who can no longer discern between fact and fiction, and true and false. They only trust what they are told, not what they see. It’s not that they believe the lie, it’s that are too exhausted to form another belief. This was said before the exhausting technology of social media was around, before the insistence that we a must have the right opinion on everything, on things like climate science and immunology, that most of us couldn’t possibly have expertise in. To avoid isolation we have to carry the right opinion or stay silent, so we select the opinion of the authorised experts, because we are too exhausted to use our own resources and too frightened to be isolated from society and the market. Even when our experts say ridiculous things, like human sex categories are made up of declarations and fabrics, people fall in because of the energy and the cost to resist.
