Another one from the archives. Here when they talk about “it” they are talking about male violence. Peter Boghossian compares the risk to women of male violence to that of marauding elephants. The entire women’s movement, since early temperance and prostitution abolition campaigns, have been centred on getting the...

This clip makes me livid. A woman I know was followed home by a man, approached and had unwanted sexual advances from that man while walking home after dark alone. In the last month. And here is a man wittering on about what steps women have or haven’t taken to defend themselves. I’m 48. The number of times I’ve been followed and had sexual harassment from a random stranger who could physically overpower me? Zero. None. It has not happened. When my friend told me about this, other women shared their experiences and gave advice. It’s happened to all of them. If there were marauding elephants risking Peter’s wellbeing - those elephants would be rounded up and shot. Including ones that might be safe. Is Peter wise to use such an analogy?

And the low IQ dopey men who come to defend him, they are his audience. He’s very low brow focussed for someone with academic credentials. Leave it to the Tates brother, you’re embarrassing yourself.

The doubling down and look at the comment, so the point taken is that male violence is no material risk to women, it’s just female hysterics. This is a man who is taken seriously by the “centrists”.

My jaw drops now as it did the first time I watched this. Boghossian doesn’t seem to see that women are human and should be able to live (in a society built for humans) without being in constant danger from male violence.

The three clowns who wrote that terrible book all argue, not that feminism has gone wrong, but that women and girls are not structurally vulnerable enough to require special protections in civil rights legislation.

Sorry, can’t take him seriously. I find some of his arguments disingenuous. I think he views himself as such a big deal that he is unable to step outside of his individualistic and patriarchally benevolent viewpoint. His interview with Deborah So had me hoisting various red flags as well.

Edie Wyatt 的头像
Edie Wyatt3 天前

I didn’t see it. But saying that the risk of male violence is a matter of female hysterics is quite the position for someone who calls himself a moderate and a liberal. We could just give him crime and prison statistics.

I have been the subject of male violence a few times in my life. Certainly NOT histrionic. This is the experience of majority of women. I have also had a few boyfriends who punched holes in the wall when enraged so I cannot believe it is an uncommon experience for most women. He has elitist luxury beliefs.

Edie Wyatt 的头像

We could ask him if he’d like a dollar for every woman who was the victim of male violence or a dollar for men who are the victims of a type of animal bigger and stronger than them. It’s an apt analogy in a way because men rarely encounter a type of animal that is bigger and stronger than them and we live with them every day.

@OmegaFiveOG @DeepakNambisan But why not compare the experience that men have had regarding male violence and female violence to the experiences that women have had regarding male violence and female violence?

Edie Wyatt 的头像
Edie Wyatt3 天前

@OmegaFiveOG @DeepakNambisan Well that would be uncomfortable. We’d have to say”Peter, what if you were in prison with men who were younger, fitter and bigger than you? What steps would you take to protect yourself against men who are physically superior to you in every way?”

odabuu 的头像

@OmegaFiveOG @DeepakNambisan But you could also just compare the experiences of men and women facing male and female violence

Edie Wyatt 的头像

@OmegaFiveOG @DeepakNambisan But the point is that women are at a power disadvantage, that’s why he said an elephant, because elephants are bigger and stronger than men. Surely you are not this stupid?

He’s lucky smugness and casual ignorance aren’t attractive to the wrong kind of men. He doesn’t look very sturdy. There is no enhancement that gives women eyes in the back of the head, or an operational sixth sense. The bad men don’t challenge in duel or demand to meet on a field of honor face to face. They are definitionally the lowest of males, opportunistic, damaged. Most women take precautions, and the older we are and more understanding of human nature, the more we take. A weapon? Sure. Alarm system, cameras, dog too, 3 years of martial arts, yep. I feel safer. Safe? We’ve all lost count of the close calls, the scares, just the every day aggravations of the unwanted attention of a persistent creep who we have to situationally manage. He lives in a cheap, unearned cloud of assurance. I’d like that.

Who enforces the legal & societal system feminism brought us to protect women from male violence? Males? So you trades some males to protrct you for other males to protect you...from males? Why not choose good men to marry in the first place instead of killers and drug dealers?

The fact is women are 1/5 a chance of having a poor experience with men than men. Men who are five times more likely of having violence enacted on them are telling you about how to avoid violence. Male on female violence is such a small portion of there’s an easy remedy for that

Boghossian is making an argument about revealed preference, not a claim that women live in a world without male offenders. If you truly believed you were going to be attacked at any moment why would you treat taking personal precautions as optional or faintly insulting?

Tbf to the analogy in countries where marauding elephants are a problem people get help from the state AND they also take steps to prepare for such an event. They don’t go blithely walking around the savannah thinking the state will protect them.

Lies and the war on men. What is The Duluth Model? The Duluth model promotes the view that hitting is a conscious strategy by MEN to assert their dominance over women. It was named over a SINGLE crime where a man killed a woman in Duluth, Minnesota in 1981. The entire theory is based on this one event and is applied to all men in domestic violence incidents as a model of male behaviour. This is the equivalent of taking Amber Heard as a representative model of all women. However, this satanic feminist ideology is completely unsupported. Most boys experience their first bout of violence from their mothers. Look at any film where relevant, and you'll see hundreds of times where a mother in a movie (normalised) slaps, punches or threatens to kill their sons. Sexual abuse is also very prevalent in single mother households. Little boys are often used as if they were the husband. If we had news articles stating that "Women are the problem" all single mothers are the problem and are more likely to be sexual predators would that be fair? Or, should we understand this problem is not a gendered problem with just women but indicative of the person and their past (generational violence) A mother that abandons her child (common) is glorified in the media "She must be reunited" but if a Father disciplines his child to teach his son not to hit anyone ever again, he's demonised. Men are punished at every opportunity and we afford women every excuse imaginable. The Duluth model is directly aimed at ALL men. It holds no explanation for female violence.

Secretary Hillary Clinton’s full remarks today at the UN session led by the State of Israel on sexual and gender based violence on October 7: “As you well know, many women and girls were attacked brutally by Hamas on October 7th, and they have testified to the gender based violence that they both experienced and witnessed. As a global community, we must respond to weaponized sexual violence wherever it happens, with absolute condemnation. There can be no justifications and no excuses. Rape as a weapon of war is a crime against humanity. Such atrocities have no place in any society or any conflict. Organizations, governments, and individuals who are committed to a better future for women and girls have a responsibility to condemn all violence against women. It is outrageous that some who claim to stand for justice are closing their eyes and their hearts to the victims of Hamas. But amid such inhumanity, we can also see women leading the way forward, As is so often the case. I have met survivors of sexual and gender based violence all over the world. They are the ones who inspire me with their incredible courage and resolve. And I have seen first hand that women are not just victims of war, they are agents of peace. That's why I championed Security Council resolutions recognizing the unique impact of conflict on women and girls and the importance of women in peacekeeping and security, and mandating that peacekeeping missions protect women and girls from sexual violence in areas of armed conflict. You know women on both sides of the current conflict in the Middle East have long worked for a just and lasting peace. I have grieved with Israeli women who have lost loved ones to terrorist attacks, but refuse to believe that peace is impossible. I have talked and listened to Palestinian women who have suffered greatly from the conflicts of the past decades, yet dream of a peaceful future and a state of their own. We honor all the brave women on the front lines of conflict by lifting up their voices and bearing witness to the crimes they have endured. I urge everyone present to make your position clear. We stand for the safety and equality of women always and everywhere, from Ukraine to the Middle East, to Sudan to the Democratic Republic of Congo everywhere, and we unequivocally condemn the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7th.”
