I see some people asking about white helmets for Alabama Football so for those too young to remember here is a clip from the 1983 Alabama Football season when freshman Cornelius Bennett blocked a punt and returned it for a TD against LSU. Would love his thoughts on the white helmets.

With only 11 days until Alabama Football starts the 2025 season, today we remember Mike Shula, who many today never got to see play as the starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide in the mid-80s. Being the son of an NFL legend didn’t prevent the left-hander from leading Christopher Columbus High School in Miami to the state championship game his senior year and earning a scholarship offer from new Alabama head coach Ray Perkins. Shula worked his way into the starting role as a sophomore, but the first game of his junior season in 1985 solidified his legacy in Alabama history. After Georgia blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to give the Bulldogs a stunning 16-13 lead with just 50 seconds remaining in Sanford Stadium, Shula displayed the cool demeanor that first attracted the attention of Perkins. Starting at the Alabama 29-yard line, Shula carved up the Georgia defense, completing 4-of-5 passes for 71 yards. He hit Al Bell across the middle for a game-winning, 17-yard touchdown that gave the Crimson Tide a thrilling 20-16 Labor Day victory that took just 45 seconds. “It wasn’t like we just sat there and let them score on that last drive,” Georgia defensive coordinator Bill Lewis said. “We tired to mix things up with the blitz and zone, but Shula did a good job finding the holes in the zone. They anticipated the blitz real well.”

Everyone is referencing Alabama Football legend Derrick Thomas today because it’s 55 days until the Crimson Tide faces Florida State. To me his greatest performance occurred in an 8-3 victory over Penn State in 1988. Thomas had nine QB hurries, three sacks and a safety.

With only 27 days until Alabama Football starts the 2025 season, today is a moment to remember Siran Stacy, who won an SEC championship in 1989, but whose resiliency following a tragedy has inspired others. In November 2007, a drunk driver struck Stacy’s van not more than a few miles from his house and changed his life in one instant. The accident took the lives of Stacy’s wife and four of his five children with only 4-year-old Shelly surviving. A year later, Stacy and his daughter, both recovered from their injuries, brought the game ball out for the 2008 Iron Bowl and more than 100,000 people inside Bryant-Denny Stadium wept and cheered in unison for the strength and faith of the Stacy family.

With only 37 days until Alabama Football starts the 2025 season, this is a perfect time to remember Shaun Alexander’s historic performance against LSU in 1996. Alexander rushed for a school-record 291 yards and four touchdowns as the Crimson Tide shut out LSU 26-0.

Today is the 60th birthday for Alabama Football legend Cornelius O’Landa Bennett, but true Crimson Tide fans refer to him as “Biscuit” because he always had room for one more. Born Aug. 25, 1965, in Birmingham, Cornelius Bennett excelled in football, basketball and baseball at Ensley High School, before signing with the Crimson Tide and becoming a foundational player in 1983 for new Alabama head coach Ray Perkins. After moving to linebacker, Bennett became a three-time, first-team selection to the College Football All-America team. As a senior, he won the Lombardi Award and SEC Player of the Year honors. He finished his Alabama career with 287 tackles, 21.5 sacks and three fumble recoveries (which might have been four if the officials had made the right call on sack of Steve Beuerlein in 1986). The Indianapolis Colts selected Bennett second overall in the 1987 NFL Draft, but then traded him in a three-way deal to the Buffalo Bills where he became a five-time Pro Bowl player.
