Five years ahead of schedule. $195 million under budget. Since October 2023, crews replaced 196 bridge structures and more than 12,600 feet of railroad along the 133-year-old Park Avenue Viaduct—all over 28 tightly coordinated weekends while maintaining full Metro-North service. The work took place along a critical corridor carrying 98% of Metro-North trains—approximately 750 trains and 260,000 passengers every day. With the major structural replacement now complete, we asked the project lead how the MTA delivered the work faster and for less without disrupting service.

Five years ahead of schedule. $195 million under budget. Since October 2023, crews replaced 196 bridge structures and more than 12,600 feet of railroad along the 133-year-old Park Avenue Viaduct—all over 28 tightly coordinated weekends while maintaining full Metro-North service. Carving out the future tunnels that will bring the Q to East Harlem takes some very big machines — and they’re already taking shape. Crews are assembling the first 1.5-million-pound tunnel-boring machine that will dig through Manhattan bedrock and build the future path of the Q up to 125 St and west at least to Park Ave. See how the massive machine is taking shape ahead of its trip underground next year. A new entrance to Grand Central Madison is now open at 45 St & Madison Ave. The new access point includes elevators, escalators and a staircase connecting directly to the LIRR concourse below. Before a 190,000-pound bridge can be lifted into place on active Metro-North tracks over the course of 48 hours, it has to get to Harlem first. Weeks before each weekend replacement, crews transport, outfit, and position each piece of the bridge so everything is perfect when the installation window arrives. This is the work behind the work.
