The discovery of stolen ARVs being used on chickens in Zimbabwe is not just a scandal it is a public health catastrophe waiting to happen. In November 2024, police in Harare intercepted a consignment of 317 boxes of expired first-line ARVs destined for the black market. No one said anything about this. Zimbabwean authorities arrested two suspects for smuggling 700,000 tablets of TLD a combination of tenofovir, lamivudine, and dolutegravir which were to be used as growth stimulants for chickens . The criminals, who bought them at 70% discount, were selling the drugs to poultry farmers for US10 per tablet by the time they reached the streets . The use of ARVs in poultry is not just a new phenomenon. In 2021, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development raised serious concerns about "the illegal and widespread use of ARVs as growth stimulants in the poultry industry," specifically singling out Zimbabwe . The misuse is driven by a "misconception" that ARVs somehow promote growth in poultry, when in fact the drugs have no such effect, guys this was 2021 and our government did nothing to protect us. But the real danger lies in the public health risk. This widespread misuse could accelerate the development of drug resistance, threatening not just Zimbabwe's HIV/AIDS treatment programme, but global efforts to combat the epidemic . As one source warned, "the problem is that if they start developing drug resistance, all the steps Africa has taken in terms of combating HIV/AIDS could be thrown to the dogs" . Zimbabwe's HIV prevalence in adults is estimated at 11.8% , representing over 1.2 million people on treatment . The drugs that could be rendered ineffective by resistance cost millions to procure and distribute, and a second-line regimen is exponentially more expensive . The scale of the problem is staggering. In 2024, the Zimbabwean Ministry of Health revealed that up to 100,000 people were infected with HIV due to ARV shortages, driven by theft and corruption in the supply chain . The Ministry of Health acknowledged that the government did not have "a handle" on the problem, suggesting systemic corruption and theft . Health activists in Zimbabwe have warned that using ARVs as chicken feed "could lead to the development of drug-resistant HIV among people" . The Permanent Secretary for Health confirmed that this theft was "prevalent" and "a major concern" . The consequences will be felt far beyond Zimbabwe's borders.

Between 2012 and 2024, Somali piracy was effectively neutralized, with no major attacks reported for years. But that has changed. These numbers reflect the pirates' ability to command a premium. Somali piracy has never been a random phenomenon. It has been fueled by the collapse of the Somali state, the absence of effective governance, and the immense wealth flowing through the Gulf of Aden. The 2025 resurgence is a direct consequence of the geopolitical instability caused by the Red Sea crisis, which has allowed the pirates to exploit the chaos and the reduced naval presence. Beyond the financial cost, there is a human cost. The hijackings of 2025 have led to the detention of at least 23 crew members, and the potential for violence remains high. The Somali pirates are not just robbers; they are a symptom of a failed state and a testament to the desperation of a population that has been abandoned by its leaders. Somali piracy is not a myth. It is a real and dangerous phenomenon. But it is also a symptom of a deeper problem, a failed state, a collapsed economy, and a population that has been left with few options. The pirates are not just criminals they are the product of a society that has been destroyed by its leaders. And until Somalia is rebuilt, the piracy will continue. South Africa is not the enemy. Somalia's leaders are. And it is time the world held them accountable for the chaos they have created.

The Nigerian government is sending people in Lagos back to their State of Origin. Let that sink in. They are dividing their own people, treating them as foreigners within their own country. This is not a policy of unity, it is a policy of exclusion. It is a testament to the deep-seated tribalism that has plagued Nigeria since independence. The Igbo, the Hausa, the Yoruba they cannot live together. They don’t trust each other, they don’t love each other. They cannot build a nation. This is why Nigeria will never be great, despite its immense potential. They have resources. They have the people. But they are divided by tribe, by religion, by region. They hate each other within their own country, and they refuse to confront this hatred. They would rather send people back to their "State of Origin" than build a nation where everyone belongs. They have accepted corruption as normal, poverty as fate, and incompetence as inevitable. They have stopped questioning, stopped demanding, stopped fighting. South Africa, do not let Kenya fool you. We treat our refugees better than anyone in Africa, and better than most countries in the world. It is ironic and deeply hypocritical that Kenyan media houses spent so much time attacking South Africa, calling us xenophobic and heartless. But look at their own policies. Kenya does not allow refugees to integrate into their communities. They are confined to camps, kept in the middle of nowhere, and treated as a separate class of people. Their laws make it clear: refugees are not welcome in Kenyan society. And yet, they have the audacity to lecture us about how we treat refugees.
