"Guests visit our micro-herb garden three to four times a week, often asking how we grow our produce and what fertilisers we use. They are always pleasantly surprised to learn that everything is grown organically. Many of our guests especially enjoy picking fresh chillies from the garden to take with them, and moments like these bring me a great deal of joy," says Hussein Didi, better known as Benjo. Today, Didi serves as the Chief of Herbs, Veggies, and Fruits (CHV) at Siyam World Maldives, where he has spent more than two decades with the Sun Siyam Resorts group. After retiring from a 30-year career with the Maldives Police Service, Didi joined the company as security manager at Sun Siyam Iru Veli. His passion for gardening soon led him in a new direction, and he transitioned into horticulture, applying innovative cultivation techniques to establish hydroponic and organic micro-herb production at Siyam World Maldives. Recognising the growing demand for fresh, high-quality produce across the resort's restaurants, Didi successfully introduced the cultivation of watermelons, lettuces, micro-herbs, and a variety of other fruits and vegetables using sustainable, environmentally friendly farming methods. Looking ahead, Didi hopes to expand sustainable agricultural practices across the Maldives' hospitality industry, encouraging more resorts to embrace organic farming to provide guests with healthier, locally grown produce while minimising environmental impact.

Farooq Ibrahim, a 54-year-old gaadiya vendor, has spent the past five years at Siyam World Maldives, bringing with him more than three decades of experience. Farooq said the idea of introducing a traditional gaadiya at Siyam World Maldives was proposed by the resort's manager, Ausy Waseem, and director of marketing, Sara Siyam, who approached him to help create an authentic Maldivian experience for guests. Drawing on his decades of experience, he advised them on how to develop the concept. Today, he said, the gaadiya has become one of the resort's most popular attractions and is recognised across Siyam World Maldives and other Siyam resorts. He explained that when he first joined the resort, the gaadiya sold only fresh coconuts (kurumbaa), which he felt would not be enough to sustain the concept. Based on his recommendations, the offering gradually expanded to include traditional Maldivian favourites such as hedhikaa, maskaashi, dhiyaa hakuru, and mudi kaashi. The gaadiya now showcases a wide range of local produce, including fresh screwpine fruit, with the live demonstration of cutting and serving the fruit becoming a memorable experience for many guests. Farooq said he hopes more resorts across the Maldives will establish gaadiyas to help preserve and promote Maldivian culture. He also encouraged young Maldivians to consider the trade, noting that their English language skills would allow them to better engage with international visitors and elevate the experience, helping introduce this uniquely Maldivian tradition to a global audience.

Mariyam Thuhufaa, Senior Marine Biologist and Scuba Instructor at Siyam World Maldives, joined the resort ahead of its opening after working as a marine researcher at the Maldives Marine Research Institute. Over the past four years, she has led marine conservation initiatives while introducing guests to the rich underwater ecosystems of the Maldives. She has also been closely involved in the resort's Wreck to Reef project from its earliest planning stages, helping prepare the vessel before it was intentionally submerged and later monitoring how corals, fish and other marine life gradually colonised the artificial reef. According to Thuhu, the project offers a rare opportunity to study artificial reefs in the Maldives, where shipwrecks are common but scientific research on their ecological impact remains limited. She also highlighted the remarkable transformation of Siyam World's house reef since the resort opened. Although the reef was initially recovering from construction, marine life steadily returned, with increasing numbers of fish, sharks and invertebrates. Even after a major coral bleaching event, the reef recovered quickly, strengthening confidence in its growing resilience. Looking ahead, Thuhu hopes initiatives such as Wreck to Reef will expand across the Maldives, raising awareness of marine conservation and encouraging more young people to pursue careers in marine science. She believes collaboration between resorts, local communities and researchers can help protect the nation's reefs, advance scientific understanding and inspire future generations to safeguard the ocean.
