🗣️: “hi george, sorry to see you standing here. just talk us through what happened and when and what you knew of it.” george: “i mean, just everything turned off all of a sudden, just went into the corner. yeah, engine stops, no electronics, no proper braking. so yeah, a bit lost for words to be honest right now. it's… yeah, i can't really say much more.”

Lando’s radio during the safety car: Lando: “What are we doing?” Will: “We’re staying out.” Lando: “Is everyone boxed?” Will: “Almost everyone, yeah.” Lando: “We should’ve just followed him in, no? If we knew the car was ahead staying out. (?)” Will: “They have lost all their flexibility for remainder of the race.” Oscar’s radio during the safety car: Oscar: “Are we boxing or staying out?” Tom: “Stand by… Oscar, we are staying out. Stay out.” Oscar: “Copy, staying out.” Tom: “So Oscar, here’s the picture. Yourself, Lando, and Ocon stayed out. Everyone else has taken it. Pitting on that lap means we know exactly when they have to pit on the next stop.” Oscar: “Copy.” Now, spot the differences.

Martinle Brundle: “One thing that really worried me was Lando Norris saying, ‘I didn’t want to overtake Lewis Hamilton, but my battery decided it did, and then I had nothing to defend with’. Now, there’s a regulation in Formula 1. It’s been around forever. It’s very simple and far reaching. The driver must drive the car alone and unaided. [..] The driver shouldn’t have any surprises by a self-learning car. They’ve got to get rid of that. I’m sure it’s not the work of a moment, but you know, the power delivery must be proportional to what the driver is doing with the throttle. That’s a fundamental. It has to be linear. It’s a big issue for the FIA."

🗣️: "As the 28-year-old, were you able to understand Kimi’s frustration after reviewing the sequence?" George: "No, for sure. Even being 28 years old, if I was in his position and he was in my position, I probably would have reacted the same. Because if something doesn’t pay off in the moment and you feel like you’ve been hard done by, you think the other guy is in the wrong. And that’s just natural. We’re racers, we’re fighters and we wear our heart on our sleeve. It’s just part of racing. As we always say as F1 drivers, you put a microphone on the 22 footballers on the field and they get a bad tackle or whatever, they’re not going to say, 'Thank you very much.' So, we’re just in this tough position that everything we think and feel is broadcast to the world. We don’t regret anything we say. Of course, maybe you wish you said something different, but we’re here to fight. And as Sebastian Vettel says, 'We’re not in kindergarten.' Is that what he says? I don’t know. Is that what he said? Yeah.”

Bradley Lord (Deputy TP of Mercedes) on George’s Canada weekend and his DNF: “It's always a funny feeling when one car has won the race and the other one's retired through no fault of the driver. Because it's very very hard to feel truly jubilant when you've seen 18 points, or could have been 25 or 18 for George, but a 1-2 go begging. Absolutely no fault of George's, he drove brilliantly all weekend and I think would have been a very worthy winner of the Grand Prix as well after his performances to take two pole positions and the sprint win. But yeah, a sudden sort of kill of the earth system on the car as he came into turn 8 and then that did a reasonable amount of damage afterwards as well. We got the car back. We were able to get the module out of it. It had to go undergo some sort of pretty unusual safety procedures and then has to be shipped back actually to the UK. So, it'll be several months before the hardware gets back and we need to really dig through the data to understand exactly what went wrong and then how can we try and prevent a repeat on any of the other modules in the future.” 🗣️: “Picking up on that Evan, how much notification or pre-warning do you get when certain issues arise on the car when you're just looking at the telemetry and the data?” Evan Short (Mercedes’ Head of Trackside Electronics and Controls): “Like in this particular case, very little. So we're looking at the data, the first thing we see is a sudden stop in all the squiggly lines that we're looking at. And of course, the first thing we think is ‘oh, something's gone wrong on my laptop.’ And then you look around and think ‘oh, no one's got any data.’ And actually, because we're not watching, the engineers don't tend to be watching the television live, that's the first thing you notice and it's only when you then glance up at the TV and see the car grinding to a halt that you realize what's really happened. But as Bradley says, you know, we've got a lot of folks going through that data now with a fine-tooth comb. So, well, we won't have the hardware back. I'm sure there's going to be some clues in the seconds leading up to the failure.”

Lando: “In a way I wanted to keep number 4 because I'm just happy with that and it goes well with my logo. So that's how straightforward I am. But I will go with number 1. Because I have to. I have to. It could be my only opportunity in my life that I get to do such a thing. Not many people in the world get to do that kind of thing. And it's not for me. It's just for my mechanics. This is for my engineers. It's the fact that they get to run with the number 1 on the car. And I think it'll mean a lot more to them than it does to me as a number. And for me, that's a lot more important.”

🗣️: “how do you pick yourself up? i know when you spoke to martin, you said losing a few points here and there is no big deal. it's the zeros you don't want. and really, sadly, that's what's happened today. how do you pick yourself up? george: “i've got to be honest, i'm proud of my weekend. you know, pole in the sprint, won the sprint, pole in qualifying. i was leading when I stopped. i had good battling with kimi. you know, from my side, i don't feel like there was anything more i could have done this weekend, so i'll leave satisfied. of course, i'm pretty damn frustrated with what's happened, but... yeah, what more can i do?”

Isack: “I remember being in the cooldown room with Max and Oscar. And they were ready for that. And, you know, they had their trainers with towels, so they could change and I was like… and I looked at Harry, my guy. I was like ‘you brought me a towel?’ He was like ‘no, of course.’[..] And they all had like brand new suits because after the podium you stink and they get changed and they had like this custom towel where they fit it around them so they can actually like get changed without like- I was amazed. I was like wow.” 🗣️: “So then you went up on the podium in your disgusting sweaty suit.” Isack: “Yeah exactly. During press conference and these guys smelled good. They were brand new and I was like ‘that's not fair.’” i actually did not know drivers were changing into new race suits after the podium?? but it seems isack and his trainer also didn't know, so… 😂

Max on his relationship with Lando: 🗣️: “My co-worker is a huge F1 fan and she wants to know if you’re still friends with Lando.” Max: “Yeah, I mean, that has never changed. It’s always been the same.” 🗣️: “Got a little bit of spicy at the end of the last season?” Max: “Got spicy, but there’s also a bit of fun in it, just being like that. Honestly, also the media makes it always probably a bit more spicy than it actually is.”

naomi schiff: “george, whilst he's a great driver and he's full of confidence as well, he's so difficult to overtake. like, that's one thing i will give george so much credit for is, he is incredible in his defensive driving in the sense that he never loses time while doing it. like, it doesn't compromise him too much.”

David Coulthard: “The only criticism I would have [to McLaren] is that I don't like when the engineer - ‘cause that bond between the driver and the engineer for me has to be absolute. If you guys are in the trenches together and someone blows the whistle back in the day to go out and fight the enemy. You've got to know that you're both going at the same time. You know, you're not hiding behind you and you're not hiding- You're there shoulder to shoulder. So that relationship between driver and engineer has to be unbreakable, that bond. So I think that when they do give ‘move over, don't race’ type instructions, that should come from the team principal or the sporting director. It should not come from the race engineer. The driver should absolutely believe that his engineer- he would say that's not my job, my job is to get my driver winning and I will only give instructions that can help that. But I'm a professional and therefore if there's an instruction which is going to get my driver to hold position, that has to come from someone else in the team.”

Paul Aron on McLaren’s strategy: “From my perspective, the only way I could kind of justify it is I thought maybe they wanted to leave Oscar out because they were afraid of giving away track position to Max. But then if you take Lando's situation, to be fair, it was a no-brainer to pit him because he had no first place to lose, so he wasn’t giving away any track position. And then I thought maybe they didn’t pit Lando either because they wanted to keep it fair between the two drivers. That’s the only explanation I could give it, that once they realised that they’d messed it up with Oscar, they kept Lando on the same strategy, not to give one the edge over the other. But ultimately I think everyone knew straight away that was a mistake. And it doesn’t matter how quick you are, I think nowadays with these cars, even how close they are, you can’t expect to make back a pit-stop gap with just pure race pace. So yeah, I think everyone knew that it was a bit of a mistake from them.”

Oscar on Lando and their relationship: "I mean his car collection, I'm trying to catch up. I think honestly similar things like I think, you know, it's nice that we are able to leave kind of what happens on track on the track and you know be friendly off the track. I think it's like Lando said it's very easy for it to not be that way. And, you know, that definitely takes cooperation from both parties. So, yeah, I think for me that's probably what I - I mean ‘admire’ sounds a bit strong in teammates, but I think that is a very good strength of Lando’s.” #AbuDhabiGP

“Was it a conscious decision not to pit or just an error or missed the moment?” Andrea Stella: “It was a decision. It was a decision not to pit and in fairness we didn't expect everyone else to pit. Obviously everyone else behind you pits then it makes it pitting like definitely the right thing to do. Obviously when you are the lead car you don't know exactly what the others are going to do. There could have been a loss for Lando in pitting in case we were pitting both cars with the double stack. But effectively the main reason was related to not expecting everyone else to pit. So it was a decision but as a matter of fact it wasn't the correct decision.” #QatarGP

“Zak and Andrea have said throughout the year that the emphasis is on treating you and Lando fairly and giving you equal opportunity, even so much as being willing to sacrifice the Drivers’ Championship to afford you that opportunity. Now that you’re living that scenario, how does that sit with you? And do you think that same approach next year is something you’d sign up to, having been through this experience?" Oscar: “I don’t think there’s really been too many scenarios where it’s been detrimental to us, really. Obviously, there was what happened in Monza, but that’s really the only one where maybe you can. Well, a lot of people did argue about it, but I think the last few races have been nothing to do with how we’ve approached things as a team going wrong. On my side, it’s been some things with the car and myself just not working. Clearly, Lando has been very quick the last few weeks. This weekend, I think we got it wrong just because that’s what we thought was the right thing to do – not because we were concerned about what was fair or what was not. So I don’t think we need to change that approach. I think it yields a lot of positives. Yes, there are some tough moments, but there are also a lot of tough moments if you go in a different direction to that. So, yeah, I don’t think we need to change anything.” #QatarGP

Lando: “Like an avocado… Sushi! Ew, that looks horrible. Is it cucumber?” Interviewer: “What is it about sushi you don't like?” Lando: “Everything. The look, the smell, the texture. I don't know. All of it. You know me. If you don't, I do not like anything from the sea. Look, smell, taste. I think like all five senses. Hate. Even the sound. Not for me.”

"How do you think you're going to grow as a driver as a result of this championship?" Lando: "That I'll find out. You know, I feel proud but not because I'm gonna wake up tomorrow and go, "I beat everyone." I'm not proud because I get to just say I'm a world champion. I'm proud because I feel like I made a lot of other people happy. I made my engineer Will, Jarv as well, they don’t get to see their family much. They've seen me grow up more than they've seen their own kids grow up. I feel bad about that. But the fact that they put so much effort into making me perform and helping us- I'm shaking. Helping us all perform. The fact I get to make them feel like their time has been, hopefully, a little bit worth it, that's what makes me so happy." #AbuDhabiGP

Bukayo Saka congratulates Lando and says he’d love a tour around McLaren with Lando: Lando: “If Lando Norris, McLaren driver, were a Premier League footballer, he would be Bukayo Saka. Both Norris and Saka are known for their speed, agility, and dynamic style. Much like Norris’ quick reflexes on track, Saka’s ability to accelerate past defenders and create scoring opportunities is akin to the precision and prowess that Norris shows in Formula 1. Additionally both individuals possess a youthful energy and charismatic presence, making them stand out both on and off the field and the track. I’ve actually met Saka once, but I’d love to see him again. And obviously I would love to invite him down to McLaren, if he wants to come and have a little tour. Personal tour. I’ll take him around. But I love Saka.” Saka: “I love that. He’s a world champion as well. So congrats of course Lando. He deserve it. He earned it. Yeah, man. I’m open. I’ll go down there, say hello to him and yeah, it’d be nice to spend the day with him for sure.”
