45 years ago today, astronauts John Young and Bob Crippen completed the first spaceflight of the space shuttle program, STS-1, landing Columbia at Edwards Air Force Base. Hundreds of thousands of spectators gathered in the California desert to witness the landing of the 98-ton (89-tonne) orbiter following its 2-day flight.

Today the NASA family mourns the passing of astronaut and former NASA Administrator, Richard Truly. Truly will be long remembered for his pivotal work on the Space Shuttle's Approach and Landing Tests and the STS-2 and STS-8 missions. He was also the first astronaut to become a NASA Administrator in 1989 and won a Collier Trophy for his role in returning the Shuttle to flight after the Challenger tragedy. He passed away on Feb 27 at the age of 86.

13 years ago, NASA's Curiosity rover made its dangerous decent to Mars! The culmination of years of work, Curiosity safely landed in Mars's Gale Crater at 1:31 am EDT on the 6th (10:31 pm PDT on the 5th) of August 2012. Today we celebrate 60 years of NASA's exploration of Mars! #OTD in 1965, NASA's Mariner 4 made history by capturing the first close-up photos of Mars as it flew by. Its 21 grainy images revealed a barren, cratered landscape—forever changing our concept of the Red Planet.

"Good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you—all of you on the good Earth" The Apollo 8 crew became the first humans to orbit the Moon on Christmas Eve 1986. The crew presented a live TV broadcast which ended with a reading from Genesis.

On the 4th of July in 1982, thousands of spectators flocked to the California desert for a special event! Astronauts TK Mattingly and Hank Hartsfield made a perfect landing of the Columbia orbiter as STS-4, the final test flight of the Space Shuttle, ended #OTD in 1982.

20 years ago today, ESA's Huygens probe gave us jaw-dropping views of the surface of Saturn's hazy moon, Titan, as it became the first probe to land on a world in the outer solar system. Watch part of its 147-minute descent through Titan's atmosphere to land in a soft riverbed.
