Kennedy, a doctor, passed a bill in the Utah Senate banning gender affirming care pending a study by the state. Well, the state did the study, produced 1000 pages of evidence showing that Kennedy's legislation was misguided, & the legislature shelved it. Here's the speech I gave:

I stopped by the warehouse that was sold to DHS/ICE. It’s massive. We cannot let the sort of human suffering and indignity that happens at these facilities continue. Demand your elected officials stand up, speak out, and use whatever power they have to prevent this from happening. Abolish ICE. Prosecute. Make good trouble.

Big news today in our race: multiple reports show other candidates with big conflicts of interest. The Lever reported on the Better Blue Fund, a joint fundraising committee tied to Ben McAdams that takes money from AIPAC's biggest donors and sends it to their most reliable votes in Congress.

I support calls to invoke the 25th Amendment, and failing that, the next Congress needs to be prepared to move forward with impeachment hearings. Trump is signaling that he is prepared to commit war crimes, and it's Congress's job to stop him if no one else will.

I was heartbroken to learn about the shooting on Brown U's campus yesterday. Guns have no place on college campuses, and here in Utah policymakers have removed the authority of campus leaders to regulate firearms, even allowing students to store them in dorm rooms. This is inappropriate and dangerous, and I will be proposing a bill to change the law that puts our students at risk. If we don't have these conversations after tragedies like this, we'll never see changes in the right direction. We can't let more young people fall victim to unnecessary violence because adults are unwilling to make tough decisions.

Last night, a flight I was on was late to deboard because a woman was being ripped away from her family by ICE in the middle of the airport. The cruelty we are seeing is pervading every corner of our lives, making travel terrifying and inefficient for all of us. Democrats must stay strong in refusing to fund ICE and go even further by abolishing it, while Republicans must come to the table, stop holding TSA and FEMA workers hostage, and pass a funding bill that doesn't exacerbate the harm we're seeing in our communities.

With a heavy heart, today I was grateful to have the opportunity to read names of children killed in the genocide in Gaza. It was a solemn reminder on the first day of the legislative session that we can shape policy to address violence and stop funding war while focusing on providing for our communities, or we can keep promoting the militarism that is killing people at home and abroad. I choose the former.

Thanks to the Rachel Maddow for having me on tonight to highlight how ICE is terrorizing our community in Salt Lake City and across the country. We need leaders who will stand up for our immigrant communities, listen to them, and take on the authoritarians like Trump who think they can get away with these atrocities. We don’t need more status-quo politicians like my opponent, Ben McAdams, who has been bought-and-paid for by the private prison industry and ICE contractors. This new DHS facility (internment camp) moved forward without any community input. That’s not how democracy should work. We need systems rooted in compassion that create real pathways to citizenship, we need to abolish ICE and prosecute the folks responsible. The agency should lose any social license to operate for tearing families apart in our streets.

Ben McAdams won't acknowledge the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Instead, he believes the "atrocities" have "ended." Palestinians are still dying while hawkish politicians like Ben who are funded by defense contractors, oil executives, and conservative pro-Israel donors vote to continue America's broken foreign policy. The people of Gaza have been the target of a genocide, they still are, and they will continue to be if our leaders do not take immediate action to stop it.

The murder of another community member should concern all of us, particularly folks who have long preached about small government and constitutional rights. ICE is occupying Minneapolis as a blueprint for a federal takeover, and we need to stand with Minnesota and say enough is enough. I'll be at the federal building at 3 tomorrow and I want to see you there. Defund. Abolish. Prosecute.

Our rights are under attack in Utah. Today, the House Health and Human Services Committee advanced several bills that take the right to seek proper healthcare away from patients and give it to the government. Minors will no longer be able to access gender affirming care in Utah if HB 174 passes. Utahns who get gender affirming care now may lose access to care if HB 193 passes. These are decisions that should be made by patients, families and doctors, just like abortion. And they aren’t stopping there. HB 331 cracks down on protestors as we see Americans hitting the streets to object to ICE murders. Several other bills continue to undermine our courts, creating new venues for the legislature to appeal decisions they don’t like to conservative judges they hand pick. Utah needs a firewall, and we need representation who will take on these fights and not fold when things get uncomfortable.

Dismayed to hear that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will be taking enforcement actions at the @uscis office here in Salt Lake City. Immigrants are our neighbors & these are folks who are following the rules. I’m committed to investigating the ICE facility in WVC on day one if I’m elected to Congress.

Our favorite Christmas tradition is to get a Forest Service permit to cut a tree up in the Uintas. It’s good practice for fire management! We went up to the Utah/Wyoming border today to land a tree. It was just a bit warmer than last year, when we were struggling through waist-deep snow. Today it was 50 degrees up in the mountains, and we’ve set a number of record highs in recent days, with low temperatures remaining above previous records. Climate change (and corporate greed!) is driving up the costs of housing and electricity by spiking insurance costs and I’m committed to a Green New Deal to rebuild our economy in a way that works for the masses. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and yours and to a happy new year for all.

Republicans brought in millions of dollars from outside the state, used national surrogates and misinformation, and hired shady contractors accused of fraud to try to overturn Prop 4. They’re not going to succeed regardless of the sketchy tactics they’re using to interfere in our elections. They rigged the process against us and now they’re working hard to suppress Utahns from engaging in the civic process. Don’t. Do the opposite. Now more than ever, we need you to be involved. Spread the word, help a candidate you like, and tell your friends and family to get their signature removed if they were one of the thousands who were misled.
