In a clip from several years ago, Barack Obama reflected on the 2009 Iranian uprisings, expressing regret for not standing more decisively with the Iranian people. Today, the United States has a historic opportunity to demonstrate genuine support for those striving for democracy in Iran. In light of recent statements by Donald J. Trump regarding the protection of Iranian protesters, steps to translate words into meaningful support would be welcome. A high-level consultation with President Donald J. Trump, Marco Rubio, and representatives of the Iranian opposition, both inside and outside Iran, with secure remote participation, could be convened promptly to explore the most effective measures to end tyranny and topple the regime.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: the vast majority of Iranians, more than 85%, seek complete regime change and represent the West’s most natural allies. They aspire to freedom, secular democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and friendly constructive engagement with the international community. In their hour of desperation after tens of thousands were slaughtered in January, most Iranians called for targeted foreign intervention focused on regime and IRGC command structures. They did not mean killing or injuring innocent Iranian citizens, destroying infrastructure like commuter bridges or systems that would harm ordinary citizens. They understand the reality of collateral damage and, in many cases, are willing to accept personal risk for the sake of change. But that is very different from endorsing broad, collective, indiscriminate harm and damage to the population. Using phrases like “we are going to bring them back to the stone ages” is not only inappropriate, it risks alienating the very people who could be the US’s strongest partners. If such rhetoric is translated into policy, it only fuels resentment and pushes the nation toward viewing countries like the United States as adversaries, rather than allies.

Yesterday, an Iranian-Swedish man was executed on bogus charges of espionage. Today, these three men, including 19 year old wrestling champion Saleh Mohammadi, involved in January protests were also executed after televised coerced confessions under duress. No lawyers. No proper trials. I am afraid there will be an execution spree in the coming days and months. The international community must be involved in helping with regime change; otherwise, we will continue to see mass slaughter and executions of Iranians. Even a weakened mullah regime and IRGC will continue to pose a threat to the world.
