A mother of eight from Ashipepe village in the Eengodi Constituency of the Oshikoto Region is appealing for help to install a tap at her homestead. Indileni Haidula has four children living with ectodermal dysplasia, a rare group of disorders affecting the skin, sweat glands, hair, teeth and nails. The condition requires them to have regular access to clean water. Haidula says she lost a son to the condition in 2005, when he was five years old. She says she is raising the children without support from their fathers and has also faced stigma in her community. “Some people in the community mock me and my children because of how we look,” she said. Community activist Petrus Theofelus is appealing to special schools to consider enrolling the children. Four people have died, and 18 others have been injured in a road accident on the Okahandja-Otjiwarongo road, approximately 120 kilometres from Otjiwarongo, this morning. A 16-seater bus belonging to Holms Construction, which was travelling from Windhoek, was carrying 15 occupants, one of whom died, while 14 others were injured. Three people, including the driver of the small bakkie that was travelling from Otjiwarongo, also died at the scene. Four additional occupants sustained injuries. The police are yet to release an official statement on the accident, and further details regarding the circumstances of the crash are pending. A 34-year-old man is receiving treatment at Katima Mulilo State Hospital after surviving a lion attack in the Kasika area, Kabbe South constituency, on Thursday. Nsundano Libuku, a local fisherman, said he was herding his grandfather's cattle towards a stream with two friends when they noticed the cattle suddenly dispersing. Upon closer inspection, he reported, they discovered a calf they suspected had been killed by a lion. Moments later, he heard the lion roar and saw it immediately pounce on him. He responded by stabbing the animal on its forehead with his spear. During the struggle, he was injured on his left hand, right cheek, neck, and the left side of his head and ear. He added that the animal loosened from the spear and instantly ran off. Nsundano said they only noticed the presence of a second lion after the first one fled. He also said his two friends could not assist because they had no weapons to defend themselves or him. He was treated by officials from the Nakabolelwa Conservancy before being taken to Kasika Clinic, then transported to Katima Mulilo by ambulance. Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism officials confirmed they had received the incident report and would respond in due course. Three men suspected of operating a fake-taxi robbery syndicate in Windhoek have been arrested following a series of alleged robberies targeting mainly female passengers. Police say they have been pursuing the suspects for the past two to three months after receiving reports of passengers being robbed by individuals posing as legitimate taxi operators. The suspects allegedly used fake taxi numbers and registration plates to lure unsuspecting passengers before threatening them with knives and forcing them to transfer money from their bank accounts. In one alleged incident, a victim lost about N$20 000 and was reportedly subjected to further intimidation, including having her hair pulled out. The vehicle allegedly used in the robberies has since been impounded. The City of Windhoek is urging commuters to use its taxi verification app to check the details of a taxi by entering its registration number. Commuters are advised not to board the vehicle if the information displayed on the app does not match the vehicle, as it could be a pirate taxi. Police are also appealing to other possible victims to come forward and open cases, which could assist with the investigation and lead to further arrests. Affirmative Repositioning (AR) MP Tuhafeni Kalola is calling for gym memberships and wellness programmes to be included as medical aid benefits for public servants. Giving notice of a motion in the National Assembly, Kalola proposed that the Minister of Finance, in collaboration with the Public Service Commission, direct the medical aid scheme administrator to consider adding gym memberships and wellness programmes as core benefits. He also proposed that the scheme negotiate corporate discounts with registered gyms, fitness centres and wellness facilities across all 14 regions to improve access for public servants. Kalola further called for a benefit structure allowing members to claim gym memberships through their medical aid, citing a similar approach by Namibia Health Plan. He said greater investment in preventative healthcare could help address lifestyle-related illnesses and reduce future medical costs. Children of businessman Frans Aupa Indongo, along with other family members, took to the streets to demand the resignation of Martin Shipanga, Chairman of the Indongo Group, and Salomon “Solly” Amadhila, Chairman of the Indongo Trust. The demonstrators marched to the Indongo family homestead at Continental Number One at Oshakati, where they presented a petition outlining their concerns. However, the petition was not received, as the office of the Chairman of the Indongo Trust was closed at the time of their arrival. In their petition, the family members called for greater representation of the founder's children and immediate family in the governance structures of the Indongo Group and Indongo Trust. They argued that, as members of the founder's immediate family, they should have a meaningful role in decision-making concerning the future of the institutions established by Indongo, including matters relating to his legacy, interests and long-term wishes. The family members expressed concern that their voices and interests have allegedly been excluded from important discussions concerning the group's business affairs and the future management of the founder's legacy because his children and family members were removed from the board. They further called for a review of the positions and terms of office of Shipanga and Amadhila, alleging that their respective terms had expired. The family raised concerns regarding who holds the authority to renew or extend the terms of office for Shipanga and Amadhila. They also called for greater clarity and transparency in the governance arrangements. The demonstrators are demanding that both Shipanga and Amadhila step down from their positions with immediate effect. Beyond governance issues, the family is also calling for greater financial support for the founder's children and family members. Their demands reportedly include assistance with education and further studies, medical support, business opportunities and other forms of necessary family assistance. They said the family wants the institutions associated with Frans Aupa Indongo's legacy to operate on principles of transparency, accountability, respect, proper governance and meaningful family representation. Affirmative Repositioning leader Prof. Job Amupanda has questioned Namibia’s position on supporting a female candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. Prof. Amupanda raised the issue with Minister in the Presidency Dr Charles Mubita, in the National Assembly, following President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s call for a woman to be elected as the next UN Secretary-General during her address to the 81st UN General Assembly. He questioned whether prioritising a female candidate could affect Namibia’s foreign policy, arguing that the choice of a UN Secretary-General should also take into account a candidate’s ability to deliver on Africa’s priorities. Dr Mubita explained that Namibia’s position is informed by gender equality policies of the United Nations, the African Union and SADC. He stressed that capacity takes first priority when Namibia considers candidates for leadership positions in international organisations. Where candidates are considered to have equal capacity, Dr Mubita indicated that Namibia would campaign for a female candidate, citing the historical under-representation of women in leadership. A 16-year-old boy has been commended for his swift actions after rescuing twin babies who were thrown into a pond by their mother in Omutundungu village, located in the Omusati Region. Cornelius Shimwaafeni, a learner at Nicodemus Primary School, was herding livestock near the pond when he witnessed the incident. Shimwaafeni said he could not stand by and watch the 9-month-old twins drown. He narrated that he rushed to the pond and pulled both children from the water, and administered CPR before rushing them to the elders at nearby cuca shops for help. Learners from the Ohangwena Region excelled in the newly introduced Innovation category at the Mathematics and Science Awards, hosted by the National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC). Grade 12 learner Lucas Nghuuhange of Mwadikange Kaulinge Secondary School won N$40,000 for his hand-controlled excavator. Shoovaleka Patrick received N$30,000 and a bronze medal for a smart warning system designed to prevent accidents at sharp curves and narrow bridges. Grade 11 learner Tweya Nghuumono won N$10,000 for a solar-powered fighter jet. In the primary phase, 12-year-old Soini Shoonga of Makalani Primary School in Grootfontein received N$20,000 for Innovation Excellence for her electric mathematics project. The Erongo Region also produced young innovators who received awards, including N$1,000 cash prizes and laptops for their innovative projects. Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus has rejected allegations of corruption and improper dealings involving Telecom Namibia and two private companies. The allegations were raised in the National Assembly by AR leader Professor Job Amupanda, who questioned the use of a reported N$400 million loan obtained by Telecom Namibia from First National Bank. Prof. Amupanda alleged that N$100 million of the loan was intended for infrastructure while also questioning agreements allegedly signed by the company’s Chief Executive Officer shortly before his departure. He further alleged that the agreements involve private companies acting as intermediaries when Telecom Namibia customers purchase data packages. Amupanda questioned the revenue-sharing arrangements, alleging that the companies could receive between 50% and 70% of the revenue from certain packages. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has unveiled a 176.29-carat diamond at the NAMDEB Centre. The diamond, discovered on 10 May 2026 at the Southern Coastal Mine in Oranjemund, is the largest diamond recovered in Namibia in nearly two decades. The President named the diamond “Owishi,” an Oshiwambo word referring to a rare form of honey. Dr Nandi-Ndaitwah says the discovery holds the promise of contributing to national prosperity. She further highlighted Namibia’s natural diamond resources as a catalyst for growth in the mining sector, economic diversification and the funding of public services. A 24-year-old woman was denied bail in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court this morning after facing two counts of attempted murder. Theresia Johannes is accused of throwing her 9-month-old twin children, a boy and a girl, into a water pond at Omutundungu Village in the Omusati Region on Saturday with the intention to kill them. The twins were rescued by a cattle herder who witnessed the incident and intervened. During her first court appearance, Johannes broke down in tears and appeared unwell. She told the court she would conduct her own defense. The case was postponed to the 3rd of September for further investigation. Two women from Onyaluwili Village in the Anamulenge Constituency of the Omusati Region have successfully transformed their traditional Oshiwambo pottery-making skills into a sustainable business that now provides for their families. In 2013, Ridwin Amakali and Elizabeth Kefas received financial assistance exceeding N$11,000 through the micro-finance programme offered by the Anamulenge Constituency Office, which they used as start-up capital for their business. The two specialise in pots, plates, and other items, producing about 35 pots a day. However, their business is seasonal, as they can only operate from June to December. When the rains arrive, they must cease production due to the presence of snakes and scorpions. Amakali and Kefas source clay soil from specific ponds in their vicinity to create their products. The clay is finished with cow dung, after which the products are burned and varnished to give them a polished appearance. They operate from an underground workshop known as Onzimbogo, located within their home. Amakali said this arrangement is necessitated by concerns over vandalism and violence, particularly when working at night. As a way of giving back to the community, the women provide training for young people. According to Kefas, some individuals they have trained have gone on to establish their own businesses. She therefore encourages the youth to take initiative and not wait for the government to give them jobs. They sell their products in different towns, including Ondangwa and Omuthiya.
