What people care about is their day-to-day interactions with the justice system: efficient, fully functioning courts, effective and humane prisons, a healthy legal aid system. These should be the priorities of the MoJ, not legislative changes to the human rights regime.

Arts Council England was set up to increase the population's access to great art but, on the basis of inadequate evidence, a number of its recent funding decisions do the exact opposite. Centres of national excellence, like English National Opera, are at risk of closure. They must be supported.
