Boys should know how to treat people with disabilities. Most people don’t know what to say… so they stare, avoid, or say the wrong thing. Today we taught the boys something simple: speak to them, not around them. Don’t stare. Don’t assume. Just be respectful. Also, lend a helping hand. Before we started, they all knew we were trying to teach so they didn’t think I was really being mean. At the end of the day, they’re people first.

Some of y’all are really upset because I have WHITE children in my program. It’s been constant in my DMs etc. And I’m not apologizing for helping a child. You can debate race, privilege and politics all day. I’m dealing with actual children standing in front of me who need guidance, structure, skills and people who care about them. When they walk through my doors, they’re MY boys. They’re going to learn. They’re going to be challenged. They’re going to be corrected. And they’re going to be loved. I’ve had to grow and challenge some of my own prejudices over the years too. But one thing I know now: a child’s skin color will NEVER be my reason for refusing to pour into him.

Every time I post our boys in etiquette class, folks say: “Why y’all teaching them to eat like white people?” Neatness ain’t “white.” If you call it that, you’re saying being loud, dirty, & sloppy is “Black.” We’re teaching excellence, discipline, & self-respect.

Today, on January 17, around 11AM, I was pulled over by a white policeman in a small country town. I can’t believe what happened to me. I wanted to share this with you all so that others can be aware of what happens when black men are pulled over by white police officers.

Our program gets attacked because I don’t teach my boys to hate white people or live in fear of the police. Instead, I teach them auto repair, how to grow food, wear suits, use tools, and carry themselves like men. Skills > excuses. Discipline > victimhood. 👊🏾🇺🇸

“Black kids don’t benefit from the inclusion of white kids.” I completely disagree. My Black students can learn from white students. My white students can learn from Black students. Neither group is here to “fix” the other. They’re here to learn, grow, build relationships, and become better young men together. These boys are going to inherit a world filled with people who don’t look like them. I’d rather teach them how to understand, respect, and work alongside each other now. I’m not preparing them for a Black world or a white world. I’m preparing them for the world they actually have to live in.

“Somebody gets paid to fix it” is one of the worst excuses we teach kids. If you picked it up, changed your mind, and know where it came from… put it back. Yes, stores have employees. No, that does not mean we should intentionally make their job harder. Consideration is thinking about the person who comes behind you, even when nobody is making you. That is the kind of character I want these girls to have.

If you change your mind at the store, don’t just leave stuff anywhere. Today I showed the boys how people will grab something, decide they don’t want it, then leave it on whatever shelf is closest. Somebody has to come behind you and fix that. And with things like meat, milk, or frozen food, leaving it out can ruin it completely. Put it back where it belongs. Respect the workers you may never meet. Doing the right thing usually isn’t hard. It just takes a little consideration.

Y’all have been in my DMs asking me to speak on the CORNELL 7 because you know I teach my boys about consent. So let’s talk about it. I’m not here to determine anybody’s guilt or innocence. But the conversation happening around this case exposes a much bigger issue with how we teach young people about sex, consent, drugs, alcohol and personal responsibility. My standard for these boys has NEVER been simply “don’t cross the legal line.” That’s the floor. I want them to have enough wisdom, discipline and character to recognize situations they shouldn’t be in to begin with. I don’t want to raise a technically innocent idiot. Some of y’all are raising kids to be so “well behaved” that they become easy to control. Respectful does not have to mean silent. Polite does not have to mean powerless. Teach them manners, yes. But also teach them to speak up, ask questions, trust when something feels wrong, and leave situations that make them uncomfortable. Do not discipline the backbone out of your child.

It takes 30 seconds to return a shopping cart. Today I reminded the boys that being considerate shows up in the little things too. Somebody has to come behind you and collect those carts, usually out in the heat, because people were too lazy to walk a few extra steps. Put the buggy back. Respect the workers. Don’t make somebody else’s job harder just because you’re ready to go home.

Some of y’all didn’t raise honest kids. You raised kids who learned how to hide things from you. If your child is scared to tell you the truth because they already know your anger is gonna be worse than the problem, that is not respect. That is fear. Correct them. Discipline them. Hold them accountable. But make sure home is still the safest place they can bring the ugly truth. Because one day, what they are afraid to tell you might be the very thing they need you to save them from. Fear makes kids hide. Trust makes kids come home.

If the whole lobby heard your room number, your room is not private anymore. One of the first things I’m teaching these girls about traveling is protecting information that does not need to be public. Your room number should be given to you discreetly. If it gets announced where strangers can hear it, speak up and ask what your options are. Not because we want girls scared of the world. Because I want them aware enough to notice the little things that can keep them safer. Privacy is part of safety.

I was told if I let a white child into our school, it would “ruin the program.” We’re not here to build “black boys” or “white boys.” We build men — disciplined, respectful, hardworking, and free from victimhood. 👊🏾🇺🇸 Eli is a joy and our boys love each other in real life. 🫱🏿🫲🏻
