Video taken on June 8 and 9 from atop the Washington Monument shows people gathering on the National Mall shortly before a large anti-Trump message appeared in dead or discolored grass there. Seen from above, the faint outline of the numbers "86 47" can be seen; "86" is slang for removing or getting rid of something, and Trump is the 47th president. The Interior Department says it is investigating. The same number sequence, "86 47," spelled out in seashells was part of an image that former FBI Director James Comey once shared on social media. He's been charged with making threats against the president, which he denies. Footage via EarthCam

Billionaire Elon Musk gave what appeared to be a fascist salute Monday while making a speech at the post-inauguration celebration for President Donald Trump at the Capital One Arena. “Some elections are important, some are not. But this one, this one really mattered and I just want to say thank you for making it happen,” Musk said before putting his hand on his chest and then raising it in a salute that appeared similar to the “Sieg Heil” used by Nazis at their victory rallies. “It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured," Musk said. Trump named Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the "Department of Government Efficiency," an outside commission aimed at identifying federal programs and spending to cut. After Trump was sworn in, multiple lawsuits were filed against the Trump administration claiming that the move violates federal transparency laws.

As the school year comes to a close, a new analysis shines a harsh spotlight on what's being called a "learning recession" among American students. It's a problem that started long before the pandemic, according to the latest National Education Scorecard — an annual deep dive into data about kids in grades K-12. The findings of this report are sobering. Children had a steady decline in math and reading scores beginning all the way back to 2013, which happens to be when smartphones and social media really took off. Compared to a decade ago, math scores today are down in 70% of school districts. Reading scores are down in 83%. Scores have climbed a bit since 2022, but nowhere close to making up all the lost ground. In fact, 8th grade reading scores are now at their lowest level since 1990. William Brangham recently spoke with Thomas Kane, one of the authors of the scorecard and a professor at Harvard University.
