Billionaire Elon Musk gave what appeared to be a fascist salute Monday while making a speech at the post-inauguration celebration for President Donald Trump at the Capital One Arena. “Some elections are important, some are not. But this one, this one really mattered and I just want to say thank you for making it happen,” Musk said before putting his hand on his chest and then raising it in a salute that appeared similar to the “Sieg Heil” used by Nazis at their victory rallies. “It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured," Musk said. Trump named Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the "Department of Government Efficiency," an outside commission aimed at identifying federal programs and spending to cut. After Trump was sworn in, multiple lawsuits were filed against the Trump administration claiming that the move violates federal transparency laws.

The FCC voted Thursday to eliminate a cap on the size and reach of TV broadcasting companies. In a 2-1 vote, the FCC repealed a 22-year-old rule holding that a company cannot own stations that reach more than a combined 39% of the U.S. television audience. The ownership limit will be replaced by a case-by-case approach. The move was widely expected, with FCC Chairman Brendan Carr writing an op-ed last month that called the earlier policy "outdated." But critics say it opens the door to mass consolidation in the industry, giving larger players more say over what viewers see.

Legendary Canadian broadcaster Lloyd Robertson has died. He signed off with his famous catchphrase, "And that's the kind of day it's been," in September 2011 after nearly three decades as chief anchor of CTV National News. Across generations, he chronicled history's defining moments with authority, poise and compassion. Robertson was consistently named one of Canada's most trusted journalists and won numerous awards. CTV News confirmed his death Tuesday. Lloyd Robertson was 92.

The same mRNA technology that made the COVID-19 vaccine possible will soon be used in flu vaccines for older Americans. The FDA has approved a new shot from Moderna — called "mFlusiva" — for adults ages 50 to 64. The company is also seeking full approval for adults 65 and older. Compared to traditional shots, mRNA vaccines are quicker to manufacture — and experts say that could help protect against future strains of influenza as they emerge. The FDA had initially refused to consider Moderna's application amid the Trump administration's heightened scrutiny of vaccines.

President Donald Trump signed executive orders Thursday afternoon targeting birthright citizenship, about a month after the Supreme Court rejected his bid to limit the practice. Trump announced the orders in the Oval Office, with adviser Stephen Miller looking on, who is a longtime critic of birthright citizenship. The two orders would expand the list of those considered ineligible for birthright citizenship and ban the practice of so-called "birth tourism." The White House expressed confidence that the new orders would be able to pass any potential legal challenges.

After Graham Platner ended his campaign, activists launched an effort to claw back campaign donations, ensuring donors' money wouldn’t be used to cover any legal fees related to Platner’s alleged misconduct. The group behind the effort, Reckoning Action, says it's trying to keep campaign cash out of what it calls "the hands of predators." The group is working with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to create a federal ban on campaigns using legal fees for sexual misconduct investigations. Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell says he's been discharged from a rehabilitation center, where he's been recovering from a fall in mid-June. In a statement, the 84-year-old said he's heading home and would "continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business" — though he did not provide a timeline on returning to the Senate. McConnell's extended absence from Washington has led to calls for transparency about his health status. He's suffered a number of health challenges in recent years and is set to retire at the end of this term.

A massive Russian missile attack killed nearly two dozen people in Ukraine overnight. Such strikes have become almost routine this summer, as Moscow looks to exploit a critical air defense shortage in Ukraine. That's if they signed up for a new subscription service from Trump Media & Technology Group, which went live this weekend.
