PRESS RELEASE NAF STRIKES TERRORISTS, RAZES ABASU AIKI HIDEOUT IN KATSINA The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA Sector 2, has delivered a decisive blow to terrorist elements in the North-West, destroying a notorious hideout linked to kingpin Abasu Aiki during a precision air strike in Katsina State. The operation, conducted on 1 May 2026, targeted a terrorist enclave within the Dan-Aji Forest in Faskari Local Government Area, following sustained and credible intelligence reports indicating renewed terrorist activity in the area. Further intelligence confirmed that the location served as a logistics hub and transit point for fighters loyal to Abasu Aiki, who have been implicated in repeated attacks on communities and security forces across the Faskari, Kankara, and Funtua axis of Katsina State. Acting on this intelligence, NAF air assets identified armed terrorists on motorcycles alongside other fighters within the enclave and executed a swift and coordinated strike on both the terrorists and their support structures. Battle Damage Assessment confirmed that several terrorists were neutralised, while the logistics hub and associated structures were destroyed, triggering explosions and widespread fires. The successful operation significantly disrupts terrorist movement and resupply within the area and underscores the Nigerian Air Force’s sustained resolve to deny terrorists safe havens, dismantle their operational networks, and support ongoing efforts to restore peace and security across the region. PRESS RELEASE NAF INTENSIFIES AIR ONSLAUGHT, PUMMELS AND NEUTRALISES TERRORISTS IN SAMBISA AND TUMBUNS HIDEOUTS The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), under the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, has intensified the tempo of its air campaign in the North-East, unleashing sustained and aggressive precision strikes that are systematically dismantling terrorist networks across Sambisa and the Tumbuns. Acting on credible intelligence, NAF aircraft struck decisively at insurgent enclaves, obliterating hideouts, crippling logistics hubs, and neutralising scores of fighters in relentless, coordinated attack runs. On 30 April 2026, air assets executed a high-impact Air Interdiction mission at Alafa in the Sambisa axis, where confirmed terrorist infrastructure and supply nodes were swiftly engaged and destroyed in successive strikes. Sustaining the momentum, NAF forces followed up on 1 May 2026 with another decisive assault on terrorist positions at Metele in the Tumbuns. Intelligence and surveillance exposed a fortified island stronghold with entrenched fighters, storage facilities, and defensive trench systems. With scores of insurgents confirmed within the target area, NAF aircraft delivered precise and overwhelming firepower, striking and decimating the location. The sustained intensity of these operations reflects a deliberate strategy of continuous pressure, denying terrorists any space to regroup or operate. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, commended the professionalism and combat effectiveness of NAF personnel. He reaffirmed the Service’s unyielding resolve to dominate the battlespace, stressing that operations will persist with increased intensity until all terrorist capabilities are dismantled and threats to national security fully neutralised. NAF ALPHA JETS: A COMBAT LEGACY FORGED IN FIRE Inducted into the Nigerian Air Force in the early 1980s, the Alpha Jet did not merely enter service, it announced a new era of fast-jet capability and operational confidence. Conceived as both an advanced trainer and a light-attack aircraft, the Alpha Jet rapidly proved it could fight as fiercely as it could train. Its defining moments were written in West Africa, where NAF Alpha Jets flew decisive combat missions under ECOMOG, striking hostile targets, disrupting enemy logistics, and delivering relentless close air support in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Years later, the aircraft again projected Nigerian resolve beyond its borders during stabilisation manoeuvres in The Gambia in 2017, supporting the enforcement of democratic mandates. At home, the Alpha Jet became synonymous with speed, precision, and authority, shaping generations of pilots, dominating contested airspace, and projecting Nigerian air power with unmistakable presence. Rugged, responsive, and battle-tested, the aircraft earned the fear-tinged nickname “Dudu Birds”, a testament to its dark silhouette, sudden appearance, and decisive impact wherever it was deployed. As Nigeria confronted insurgency, terrorism, and armed criminality, the Alpha Jet once again answered the call. Re-activated, sustained, and driven into high-tempo operations, it delivered punishing effects against hostile elements, escorting strike packages, interdicting enemy movements, and supporting troops in contact with lethal accuracy. The thunder of its engines over hostile territory became a psychological weapon, breaking enemy morale and reinforcing ground forces with visible air dominance. This combat legacy was paid for with courage and sacrifice, and the Nigerian Air Force honours the gallant Alpha Jet aircrew who flew into danger without hesitation, some of whom paid the supreme price in defence of the nation, etching their names permanently into Nigeria’s air power history. Today, that legacy is driving transition, not retirement. The NAF is aggressively modernising its fleet, inducting advanced multi-role and lead-in fighter platforms to assume and expand missions once undertaken by the Alpha Jet, with greater persistence, sensors, and survivability. Through this deliberate evolution, the Alpha Jet’s legacy is not fading, it is being institutionalised, as the Nigerian Air Force advances from a proven combat icon to a new generation of air power, sharper, smarter, and deadlier in defence of the nation.
