🧬 Think of your genes like a family recipe—passed down from your parents with instructions that help shape how your body works. Over time, changes can occur in those instructions. Some may have little effect, while others can increase the risk of disease. NIH researchers are studying why additional genetic changes in some people born with a mutated gene called RUNX1 can increase their risk of developing blood cancer, while others with the mutation may never develop cancer. 🎥 Watch to learn more:

🦠 Some viruses can live quietly in your body for many years—but what happens if they “wake up”? The JC virus is one of these typically harmless viruses. Nearly 3 in 4 people have been exposed by age 70, often without ever knowing they have it. But in some people, the virus can become dangerous. 🔬 NIH researchers are working to better understand how this virus becomes life-threatening. 🎥 Watch:

“It is absolutely vital that NIH investments are geographically dispersed. The way we combat scientific groupthink is by empowering researchers across the country, no matter where they are, to have a great opportunity if they have great ideas for NIH funding.” - Jay Bhattacharya, MD, PhD

Cisplatin is one of the most effective cancer drugs we have — but it comes with a tough tradeoff: permanent hearing loss in up to half of patients who receive it. NIH scientists led by Dr. Lisa Cunningham are testing whether a common cholesterol drug, atorvastatin, can reduce that risk in randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Learn more about the trial:

Science without risk is... boring. Incremental. Safe. We asked current recipients of NIH's High-Risk, High-Reward Research Program to fill in the blank, and their answers say it all. 🎥👇 The HRHR Program exists for the ideas too bold, too early, or too unconventional for traditional funding pathways. The scientists in this video are proof of what happens when you bet on transformative thinking. 💡 Got a high-risk, high-reward idea? Funding opportunities are open now. Learn more and apply:
