Videos about China on TikTok and IG are doing more for tourism than any ad campaign ever could. 🇨🇳 No wonder why all the Sinophobes on this social media go ballistic over innocuous and apolitical content: DIY videos, drone shots of neon cities, or simple daily vlogs. Most of this is just leaked from Douyin and Red Note (Xiaohongshu); it wasn't even intended for a Western audience, let alone a non-Chinese audience. China’s modernization and sophistication have become a massive soft power instrument in and of themselves. The Sinophobic Westoids know it and they hate it. Their double standard is loud: neon lights and shiny skylines are “aesthetic” in Japan, but “propaganda” the moment they’re in China. That’s why they have to resort to the “Gansu’s remote village” trope every time they see something cool about China. They hate seeing the reality of China’s modernization. While some in the West remain stuck in this cycle of denial, the rest of the world is watching with growing fascination.

Wow I must admit that I didn’t expect Tik Tok refugees to flood the Chinese app Xiaohongshu (RedNote) because of the impending Tik Tok ban in the US. Chinese users are delighted to suddenly be able to practice their English and get to know with American people. I would have never imagined that American people could ever come to a Chinese social media platform. I naively thought all Americans must hate China given the insane amount of propaganda here. And it seems that I was wrong! Can you imagine the shock for an American who’s been told that Uyghurs are being genocided, and who literally ends up in a XHS live with an actual Uyghur saying she was a Muslim from Xinjiang? 😆 Another funny moment was when an American started to ask about the social credit score in China on a live with Chinese people 😅only to be told this is a myth that was fabricated by Western media! But some questions still linger. Will this trend continues or dies away? I guess TT refugees must be looking for monetizing alternatives. But from what I’ve understood so far, the TT refugees really don’t want to go back to any meta app, as they see it as boring, and Zuck as the main culprit behind the Tik Tok ban, as he personally lobbied the US congress to have this bill passed.

One significant advantage China has over the West is the vibrancy of its ancient culture. For example, it’s not uncommon to see people dressed in Tang dynasty clothing near historical monuments in China. This cultural expression goes beyond films; many cosplayers, models, and content creators on platforms like Douyin, Kwai, and XHS also embrace these traditions. And this doesn't even include the ethnic minorities who proudly wear their specific traditional attire. Having spent years in the West, I've never seen anyone dressed in the style of Louis XIV or wearing clothes from Europe's Renaissance golden age there, except in movies. It seems Westerners are somewhat disconnected from their ancient culture, and paradoxically, you're more likely to encounter someone cosplaying a Japanese anime character in traditional Japanese attire, which itself was appropriated from Chinese culture if were to be honest. Thus, one might argue that Chinese ancient culture is more alive in the West than European ancient culture. 🤣 This suggests that China has the potential to become a cultural superpower in the West. The mass exodus to platforms like Red Note is just a preview of this cultural influence. It's only a matter of time.
