Shamet called out the Spurs play before they ran it. That's not instinct, that's a scouting report a guy actually did the work on. Then he went and guarded it. This is the smartest roster in the league. Everybody knows their role, everybody plays it to the ceiling, and nobody's guessing. Five guys on the same page every possession. That's what a championship team looks like.

Wemby was mocking the Knicks while San Antonio was up 29. OG Anunoby took this personally. He proceeded to put up 33 points, 4 boards, 1 block, 1 steal, on 66/77/100 shooting splits. Plus a chase-down block on Fox in the final 15 seconds. Then the tip-in with 1.2 left that completed the largest comeback in Finals history. Every other team in the league cowered away from Wemby. OG went right at him.

Jose Alvarado is 6'0. Wembanyama is 7'4. Sixteen inches and a whole different world between them. Jose played 12 of the final 17 minutes in a game the Knicks trailed by 29. He didn't hide on the perimeter. He went right at the biggest man on earth, put him on the floor, and stood over him. The rest of the league spent two years scared to breathe near Wemby. A kid from Brooklyn who barely cracked the rotation walked in and hunted him. You can't coach that into somebody.

This is the greatest game winner in NBA history, and the 29 point comeback is only half the reason. OG Anunoby looked like an angel on this tip in, floating through midair to guide it into the basket. For those of you who don't know, he lost his mother to cancer when he was around one years old. He lost his father in 2018, a year into his career. I truly believe they were with him in spirit. Two guardian angels helped guide him to the ball and tip it in. It's so beautiful it almost brings a tear to my eye every time I watch.

Losing Mitch Robinson hurts. Eight years in New York, two ankle surgeries, a guy who changed games without touching the ball. Boston gave him 3 years, $47.4 million. Can’t blame him. The Knicks replaced him with Andre Drummond for $3.9 million. 4x rebounding champion. No active player has a higher career rebounding average. You don’t replace Mitch’s shot-blocking with one signing. But you replace the rebounding for a fraction of the cost. That’s how a smart front office operates.

He was also shooting with a tendon snapping over the bone in his left wrist which required surgery three weeks later. 32.6 a night. 45 in the closeout. Unanimous Finals MVP. He never gave them a word back. Just let his game do the talking and lifted the trophy in their own building.

Never forget when Karl-Anthony Towns absolutely fried Wemby in Game 2 of the Finals. 21 points on just 12 shots. 3 of 5 from deep. 13 boards, 4 assists, +11, the best mark of any Knicks starter. The unanimous DPOY couldn't leave him for a second, and it broke everything the Spurs wanted to do.

OG Anunoby looked like a guardian angel during this play. Knicks fans know he's been throughout a lot in life. He lost his mom to cancer at 1. Lost his dad early in his second NBA season. Tore his ACL at Indiana. Won a ring in Toronto, but without playing a single playoff minute due to an appendectomy. Then he rose over everyone at MSG with 1.2 seconds left to complete a 29 point comeback. Tell me his parents weren't guiding that ball in.

Jalen Brunson averages 6.5 more points per game in the playoffs than the regular season. This is the largest increase among qualified players in NBA history. Not a “heater" or just a small-sample fluke. The biggest jump from April to October basketball to when it actually matters. Regular season Brunson is elite, yet somehow in the playoffs he manages to raise his game even higher. He’s the NBA’s Mr. October and one of the best playoff performers of all time.

Never forget how Jose Alvarado went right at Wemby in the Finals. 16 inches shorter. Put him on the floor and stood over him while the rest of the league spent two years playing scared of the most feared player on earth. Then the kid from Brooklyn checked back in, rattled home the corner 3 that started an 8-0 run, and helped erase a 29-point deficit in the greatest comeback in Finals history. Wemby got all the respect. Alvarado never asked permission.

Wemby was celebrating winning the WCF like the job was already done. He thought beating OKC in 7 meant the hard part was over. Like the Knicks were just the ceremony before the coronation. Then the Knicks ran through his team in 5. Went 3-0 in San Antonio, including the closeout where the Knicks raised the trophy on his floor. The guy who needed every ounce of a 7-game series against the Thunder couldn't even push the Finals to 6. This was his peak. He just didn't know it yet.

KAT is the best center in the Eastern Conference and I'm done pretending otherwise. Scores at all three levels. Best jumper by a big man since Dirk. Post, mid range, deep, it doesn't matter. No ego. Ran the offense through him when they needed it, got out of Brunson's way when they didn't. And the defense question is dead. He guarded Wemby in the Finals and forced more turnovers than any defender in the league managed all season. What else do you want from him.

The Spurs, led by arguably the best player in the league in Victor Wembanyama. 7'4". Unanimous DPOY. 3.6 blocks a game in this series alone. Virtually every team in the league shies away from him at the rim. Not Brunson. Not the Knicks. This play epitomizes his mindset. No fear. You're the DPOY with over a foot on me? I don't care. I'm going right at you. I'm sending a statement. I'm taking you on. And I'm winning this series.

Jalen Brunson's one ring in New York is worth more than both of Kevin Durant's. Let me explain. Durant had Westbrook and Harden entering their primes, Serge Ibaka next to him, and a Finals trip by age 23. He never saw it through. He joined a 73 win Warriors team instead. Arguably the best team already ever assembled. He didn't build anything. He didn't carry anything. He decided to be a bus rider instead of a bus driver. Then he tried to be the guy in New York. Even picked his co-stars with Kyrie Irving and James Harden. He chose the alternate team in NYC to the Knicks and couldn't make it happen. Brunson did the opposite. Second-round pick. Too small. Too slow. The media torched the Knicks for building around him. Nobody thought he was a 1A. He walked into New York anyway. Took the criticism head-on. Never made an excuse. Never pointed at the roster. Just got to work. Took a team that hadn't won a title in 53 years to the Finals. Went up against Wemby, over a foot taller, reigning DPOY, arguably the best player in the league. Dropped 45 in a closeout game on the road with a shooting hand that needed surgery. Kevin Durant has two rings. Both came with training wheels. Jalen Brunson has one. It took everything.

Jalen Brunson's one ring is worth more than both of Kevin Durant's combined. To me it's not even a debate. That's not disrespect to Durant's talent either. He's one of the most gifted scorers to ever play. But rings don't exist in a vacuum. Context is everything. And the context of how those two got theirs tells you everything about what kind of competitor they are. Durant had Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Serge Ibaka, and Steven Adams in Oklahoma City. They made the Finals in 2012 and were up 3-1 on a 73-win Warriors team in 2016. All that talent, and Durant still couldn't get it done. So he joined the team that just beat him. A 73-9 Warriors squad with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green already in place, as well as some of the best role players in history. He got his rings. Two of them. And nobody with a functioning brain thinks those rings tell you he could build something. They tell you he could join something. Now look at what Brunson did. He chose the New York Knicks. A franchise that hadn't won a championship in 53 years. A franchise that LeBron, Durant, and every other marquee free agent avoided because the pressure and the spotlight would eat you alive if you weren't built for it. Brunson came anyway. And he didn't come to ride shotgun. He came to build. The Knicks constructed their roster around him piece by piece. OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart. Every one of them bought in and played their role to the ceiling every single night. No shortcuts, no superteam handshakes. Just a plan, and Brunson was the engine of it. Then came the 2026 playoffs. The most dominant postseason run in NBA history. A +283 point differential across 19 games against four different defenses. Nineteen games, four rounds, four different schemes trying to solve them, and the Knicks solved every single one. Brunson was the reason it held together. He averaged 32.6 points per game in the Finals, the highest ever by a point guard. He dropped 45 in the closeout game on the road in San Antonio. He went right at Wembanyama, the reigning DPOY, the 7'4 face of the league everyone else was scared of. He did all of this with a torn tendon in his shooting wrist that required surgery three weeks later. He never mentioned it and never used it as an excuse. 11.2 points per game in the fourth quarter of the Finals. When the game tightened and the moment got heavy, Brunson wanted the ball and he buried them with it. Durant borrowed his rings from a dynasty that didn't need him. Brunson earned his in the hardest market in sports, against the best competition in the world, while his body was falling apart. History is going to remember who built something and who just showed up.
