The Sixers won opening night, but there's real cause for concern in Philly. Anyone with a pair of eyes could see that Joel Embiid's knees are cooked. He shot 26% from the field while spending a lot of time going up against a backup center because KAT was in foul trouble. This wasn't ring rust. His legs look legitimately concerning. The shot selection was bad, the decisions were worse, and he never got any lift. I don't see how he lasts a full NBA season, let alone multiple playoff series.

The Knicks still have the best starting five in the NBA. Brunson > Maxey Bridges > Edgecombe OG = Jaylen Brown Hart Embiid Knicks bench > Sixers bench Philly wins one line on that list, and we all know Hart is no concession. We swept them 4-0 in May. Won the closeout by 30 without OG. Knicks in 5.

Shamet called out the Spurs play before they ran it. That's not instinct, that's a scouting report a guy actually did the work on. Then he went and guarded it. This is the smartest roster in the league. Everybody knows their role, everybody plays it to the ceiling, and nobody's guessing. Five guys on the same page every possession. That's what a championship team looks like.

The league gave up on James Wiseman, but the defending champs didn't. He went number two overall, bounced around a few teams, and then went down with two Achilles injuries that limited him to five games over two years. Most people moved on from him after that. Now he's in a building that just won a ring, with a coaching staff that gets the most out of its guys and a locker room that expects to win every night. This franchise has been built on players other teams gave up on, and I think our winning culture is going to bring out the best in him.

Wemby was mocking the Knicks while San Antonio was up 29. OG Anunoby took this personally. He proceeded to put up 33 points, 4 boards, 1 block, 1 steal, on 66/77/100 shooting splits. Plus a chase-down block on Fox in the final 15 seconds. Then the tip-in with 1.2 left that completed the largest comeback in Finals history. Every other team in the league cowered away from Wemby. OG went right at him.

Jose Alvarado is 6'0. Wembanyama is 7'4. Sixteen inches and a whole different world between them. Jose played 12 of the final 17 minutes in a game the Knicks trailed by 29. He didn't hide on the perimeter. He went right at the biggest man on earth, put him on the floor, and stood over him. The rest of the league spent two years scared to breathe near Wemby. A kid from Brooklyn who barely cracked the rotation walked in and hunted him. You can't coach that into somebody.

Victor Wembanyama plays the role of the mature, thoughtful superstar. The playoffs showed who he really is. ESPN's Tim MacMahon and Brian Windhorst said it out loud. Streaks of immaturity the whole run. He lined up an elbow on Naz Reid's throat, then took zero accountability for it. Windhorst said he materially hurt his own team. Then came the Finals. He flexed and screamed in KAT's face over one dunk, while KAT went toe to toe with him all series. When it mattered most, the Spurs blew a 29-point lead and didn't win a single game at home. Grow up first, then we can talk about rings and greatness.

Never forget when Karl-Anthony Towns absolutely fried Wemby in Game 2 of the Finals. 21 points on just 12 shots. 3 of 5 from deep. 13 boards, 4 assists, +11, the best mark of any Knicks starter. The unanimous DPOY couldn't leave him for a second, and it broke everything the Spurs wanted to do.

Everyone has the Spurs as the favorite this year, and I get it. You've got a generational player in Wemby. Castle, Vassell and Harper are all young, all getting better, all growing into their roles. Logic says a team like that learns from the Finals, comes back stronger and wins it next time. But there's something no one is talking about. The Knicks gave the whole league the playbook on how to beat Wemby. Every other team game-planned around running away from him. The Knicks went straight at him. They put him in action every trip, made him guard on the ball and made him work, instead of letting him cherry-pick the baseline on defense all game. By the middle of the third quarter he was gassed. Now 29 teams have the tape.

The Spurs chirped, shoved, made it personal. He never took the bait. He was also shooting with a tendon snapping over the bone in his left wrist which required surgery three weeks later. 32.6 a night. 45 in the closeout. Unanimous Finals MVP. He never gave them a word back. Just let his game do the talking and lifted the trophy in their own building.

OG Anunoby looked like a guardian angel during this play. Knicks fans know he's been throughout a lot in life. He lost his mom to cancer at 1. Lost his dad early in his second NBA season. Tore his ACL at Indiana. Won a ring in Toronto, but without playing a single playoff minute due to an appendectomy. Then he rose over everyone at MSG with 1.2 seconds left to complete a 29 point comeback. Tell me his parents weren't guiding that ball in.

Losing Mitch Robinson hurts. Eight years in New York, two ankle surgeries, a guy who changed games without touching the ball. Boston gave him 3 years, $47.4 million. Can’t blame him. The Knicks replaced him with Andre Drummond for $3.9 million. 4x rebounding champion. No active player has a higher career rebounding average. You don’t replace Mitch’s shot-blocking with one signing. But you replace the rebounding for a fraction of the cost. That’s how a smart front office operates.

Jalen Brunson is arguably the best player in the NBA, and yet ESPN doesn't even have him in their top 5. Your favorite player spent the entire season hiding from Victor Wembanyama. The unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, and superstars were settling for jumpers and passing out of drives just to avoid him. Brunson went looking for him. He called for the switch, looked him in the eye and said you, come here. Then in the fourth quarter of a Finals game, on Wemby's own floor, he took him straight to the rack and laid it in like the length didn't exist. That's the difference between a stat sheet and a killer. Rank him wherever you want. He's got the ring and the Finals MVP, and your guy doesn't.

Never forget how Jose Alvarado went right at Wemby in the Finals. 16 inches shorter. Put him on the floor and stood over him while the rest of the league spent two years playing scared of the most feared player on earth. Then the kid from Brooklyn checked back in, rattled home the corner 3 that started an 8-0 run, and helped erase a 29-point deficit in the greatest comeback in Finals history. Wemby got all the respect. Alvarado never asked permission.

Heart over height. That was the theme of the entire NBA Finals. The Knicks, led by Jalen Brunson who was told he was too small to be a “1A”. The Spurs, led by arguably the best player in the league in Victor Wembanyama. 7'4". Unanimous DPOY. 3.6 blocks a game in this series alone. Virtually every team in the league shies away from him at the rim. Not Brunson. Not the Knicks. This play epitomizes his mindset. No fear. You're the DPOY with over a foot on me? I don't care. I'm going right at you. I'm sending a statement. I'm taking you on. And I'm winning this series.

KAT is the best center in the Eastern Conference and I'm done pretending otherwise. Scores at all three levels. Best jumper by a big man since Dirk. Post, mid range, deep, it doesn't matter. No ego. Ran the offense through him when they needed it, got out of Brunson's way when they didn't. And the defense question is dead. He guarded Wemby in the Finals and forced more turnovers than any defender in the league managed all season. What else do you want from him.
