Shamet called out the Spurs play before they ran it. That's not instinct, that's a scouting report a guy actually did the work on. Then he went and guarded it. This is the smartest roster in the league. Everybody knows their role, everybody plays it to the ceiling, and nobody's guessing. Five guys on the same page every possession. That's what a championship team looks like.

The Spurs chirped, shoved, made it personal. He never took the bait. He was also shooting with a tendon snapping over the bone in his left wrist which required surgery three weeks later. 32.6 a night. 45 in the closeout. Unanimous Finals MVP. He never gave them a word back. Just let his game do the talking and lifted the trophy in their own building.

Wemby was mocking the Knicks while San Antonio was up 29. OG Anunoby took this personally. He proceeded to put up 33 points, 4 boards, 1 block, 1 steal, on 66/77/100 shooting splits. Plus a chase-down block on Fox in the final 15 seconds. Then the tip-in with 1.2 left that completed the largest comeback in Finals history. Every other team in the league cowered away from Wemby. OG went right at him.

Don't forget how hard the refs tried to extend the NBA Finals. It's like the league watched the Knicks win the first two on the road and realized San Antonio didn't have a fair shot, and decided to help. Game 3: 24 free throws to 8 in the second half. 14-3 in the third alone. The Knicks in the penalty for the final 9:18 at home. They still only lost by four. Game 4 they went down 29 and won it anyway. You can tilt a whistle. You can't tilt a team that good.

OG Anunoby looked like a guardian angel during this play. Knicks fans know he's been throughout a lot in life. He lost his mom to cancer at 1. Lost his dad early in his second NBA season. Tore his ACL at Indiana. Won a ring in Toronto, but without playing a single playoff minute due to an appendectomy. Then he rose over everyone at MSG with 1.2 seconds left to complete a 29 point comeback. Tell me his parents weren't guiding that ball in.

Never forget when Karl-Anthony Towns absolutely fried Wemby in Game 2 of the Finals. 21 points on just 12 shots. 3 of 5 from deep. 13 boards, 4 assists, +11, the best mark of any Knicks starter. The unanimous DPOY couldn't leave him for a second, and it broke everything the Spurs wanted to do.

Never forget how Jose Alvarado went right at Wemby in the Finals. 16 inches shorter. Put him on the floor and stood over him while the rest of the league spent two years playing scared of the most feared player on earth. Then the kid from Brooklyn checked back in, rattled home the corner 3 that started an 8-0 run, and helped erase a 29-point deficit in the greatest comeback in Finals history. Wemby got all the respect. Alvarado never asked permission.

KAT is the best center in the Eastern Conference and I'm done pretending otherwise. Scores at all three levels. Best jumper by a big man since Dirk. Post, mid range, deep, it doesn't matter. No ego. Ran the offense through him when they needed it, got out of Brunson's way when they didn't. And the defense question is dead. He guarded Wemby in the Finals and forced more turnovers than any defender in the league managed all season. What else do you want from him.

Heart over height. That was the theme of the entire NBA Finals. The Knicks, led by Jalen Brunson who was told he was too small to be a “1A”. The Spurs, led by arguably the best player in the league in Victor Wembanyama. 7'4". Unanimous DPOY. 3.6 blocks a game in this series alone. Virtually every team in the league shies away from him at the rim. Not Brunson. Not the Knicks. This play epitomizes his mindset. No fear. You're the DPOY with over a foot on me? I don't care. I'm going right at you. I'm sending a statement. I'm taking you on. And I'm winning this series.

Brunson's footwork needs to be studied in a lab. He's not dancing for show. Every jab, every hesitation is a question, and he's reading the answer in real time. Defender's weight shifts an inch, he attacks the off foot. Hips open, he's already into the drive. That's the part people miss about his game. The burst is average, the processing speed is elite. He breaks you down before the move even starts, the footwork just finishes what his eyes already won.

Jalen Brunson's one ring in New York is worth more than both of Kevin Durant's. Let me explain. Durant had Westbrook and Harden entering their primes, Serge Ibaka next to him, and a Finals trip by age 23. He never saw it through. He joined a 73 win Warriors team instead. Arguably the best team already ever assembled. He didn't build anything. He didn't carry anything. He decided to be a bus rider instead of a bus driver. Then he tried to be the guy in New York. Even picked his co-stars with Kyrie Irving and James Harden. He chose the alternate team in NYC to the Knicks and couldn't make it happen. Brunson did the opposite. Second-round pick. Too small. Too slow. The media torched the Knicks for building around him. Nobody thought he was a 1A. He walked into New York anyway. Took the criticism head-on. Never made an excuse. Never pointed at the roster. Just got to work. Took a team that hadn't won a title in 53 years to the Finals. Went up against Wemby, over a foot taller, reigning DPOY, arguably the best player in the league. Dropped 45 in a closeout game on the road with a shooting hand that needed surgery. Kevin Durant has two rings. Both came with training wheels. Jalen Brunson has one. It took everything.

The signs were always there. Flashback to 2022 playoffs. Luka goes down before Game 1. Everyone writes Dallas off. Brunson doesn't just keep them alive, he takes over. 32.0 ppg on 51% across three games without him. A career-high 41 in Game 2. Dallas goes 2-1 before Luka even steps back on the floor. That summer the Knicks signed him and the league called it an overpay. Four years later he's got a ring and a Finals MVP. It was never a gamble. The tape was right there.

The most valuable ring since Dirk belongs to Jalen Brunson. He did it as "the man" in New York. The biggest market in the world, where some of the biggest NBA stars of our generation shied away from because the lights were too bright. He did it as the guy nobody waned. Too small, too slow, second round pick. The media mocked him saying he was a consolation prize for striking out in free agency. He did it against Wembanyama. Over a foot taller, the DPOY, arguably the best player in the league and the most physically imposing player since Shaq. He did it against the refs, where anyone watching the games knew they were favoring the Spurs as if they were doing everything in their power to extend the series. And now we know he did it with a tendon grinding against bone in his shooting hand. Every jumper hurt. He dropped 45 in the closeout anyway. Only one other player in NBA history has scored 45 on the road in a Finals clincher. Michael Jordan, 1998. Kobe would've loved to watch man operate.

I'm a fan of the Andre Drummond signing. Of course I would've loved Mitch back, but considering our circumstances with the cap, Drummond is pretty solid. We keep prolific rebounding off the bench. Drummond has the highest career total rebound percentage in NBA history at 24.8%, doesn't get much better than that. He may be a downgrade on D from Mitch, but I believe the Knicks culture will elevate him. He sets some of the nastiest screens in the NBA. He's a physical specimen. Imagine the open shots Bridges, Shamet, Deuce, and OG will get? The pick and rolls with Brunson? But here's where it gets interesting: Drummond can shoot an open 3. That's an entirely new element we missed from Mitch. He can further stretch the floor while providing the same rebounding effort off the bench. And remember, there's still room to make a move for one more 5 and they can always make a trade during the season. I love this signing. Welcome to New York, Andre Drummond.
