IGBOs: one thing I have noticed is that y’all don’t even know the difference between Afrobeat and Afrobeats with the S. Fela owns Afrobeat without the S. Fela did not own Afrobeats with the S. Afrobeats with the S was a name chosen by Nigerian musicians coming out with new sounds who needed a name for the genre. Obviously, they were influenced by Fela’s sound, Afrobeat without the S, so they opted for Afrobeats by adding an S to it. That means we are influenced by Afrobeat, but we are adding extra layers to it with different kinds of beats with the S now. If you as an Igbo man are influenced by Oliver or Osadebe, then name your sound Oliver’s or Osadebe’s. But as long as there is Afrobeats, Fela will always be given his accolades for coining the name Afrobeat, from which Afrobeats was coined. Again, Fela’s sound is Afrobeat, not Afrobeats. Musicians in Lagos and other Yoruba land were influenced by Fela’s sound, Shina Peters’ Afro-juju, Barrister’s Fuji music, and Apala. These are all coined genres. Fela added funk, pop, jazz, and highlife together and formed his own genre: Afrobeat. Nigerians, especially Yorubas, were influenced by the sound and coined their own kind of sound Afrobeats, which other Nigerians adopted. So Igbos in Igboland, if you were influenced by Osadebe, good. He does highlife. Let your music genre be Osadebe’s. Stop forcing your local musicians into other people’s reality. No Yorubas force Osupa or Pasuma on you. Osadebe influences you to sing Afrobeats? Good. That still does not change how the name was coined. Osupa influences you to sing Afrobeats? Good. Still didn’t change how the name was coined. Your hate and jealousy for the Yorubas wouldn’t change history. If as a Nigerian you pick the name Azonto from Ghana and add S to it to form Azontos does that mean the name Azontos didn’t come from Azonto Fela never said he owns Afrobeats , He owned Afrobeat, and there’s a big difference Nigerian music scene was influenced by Fela's Afrobeat of Fela and they coined the name Afrobeats with the S for their own new found Style music at the time .. So Fela will always be given his Props for this no matter how You igbos cry and cry all over the internet.. Fela was already a bandleader in the mid-1960s, while Oliver De Coque was still learning under another Yoruba man, Jacob Oluwole. By 1969, Fela was embarking on a 10-month tour in America, whereas Oliver was still working for a Yoruba man. During his time in America, Fela’s musical perspective shifted. Upon his return, he began naming everything African, including “Africa Shrine” and “Africa 70”. He then released “Gentleman”, which is considered the first Afrobeat album in 1973. Ironically, in 1973, Oliver left his Yoruba band “Oluwole” and joined another Yoruba band, Moonlight Star Band, led by Sule Agboola. This band took him on a four-month tour to the UK. The money he earned from this tour eventually funded his equipment and the start of his own band. Therefore, it’s important not to equate Oliver and Fela.
