Abdul El-Sayed explains to Chuck Todd why there is bipartisan consensus in Washington against issues that have public consensus. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: “Take health care, for example. Public consensus that the government ought to do a lot more to provide us health care. Bipartisan consensus that it shouldn't. What's the difference? Biggest single lobbyist by sector is pharma. Second biggest lobbyist by sector is insurance. Eighth biggest is hospitals and senior homes.” Watch the full conversation on the Noosphere app

Abdul El-Sayed tells Chuck Todd his actual plan to get money out of politics from within the Senate. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: “I get that the Supreme Court has already ruled on the precedent, apparently so, to say that money is speech and corporations are people, which I think is bullshit. “What happens if a 501(c)(4), operating on behalf of a corporation, or 527, or a super PAC, starts dropping money in a race? There should be equal, opposite public money that comes in, undoes that. You would watch the amount of outside money evaporate quickly, and it sidesteps the question about money and speech. So let’s pass that.” Watch the full conversation on the Noosphere app:

Abdul El-Sayed tells Chuck Todd he does not plan to move to D.C. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: My wife has made it very clear we're not moving. And and I do intend to stay married. In all seriousness, I think part of it is that it's really important to recognize that I'm a I'm a servant of the people of this state. And as much time as I can spend with the people of this state, hearing from the people of the state, my job is to go there. Watch the full conversation on the Noosphere app

NEW: Chuck Todd asks Abdul El-Sayed what it would mean to him to become the first Muslim U.S. senator. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: "They're like, well, you know, you get to have your ideals or your identity, but you don't have to get to have both. And I'm tired of being told what you can't say because of who you are. My job is to tell people the truth and to fight for the things that would be better in their lives. And I'm not pulling my punches because of what my name is. If anything, I want folks to see that all of us can come together around ideals that are good for all of us." .Chuck Todd: What do you think the hesitance has been in the black community with [Dr. Abdul El-Sayed]? André Carson: I think it dates back to the earlier part of the 20th century, where you had Muslims in Michigan, particularly Detroit. You had the Ahmadiyya movement. You had the the great Morris Science Temple. You had the Nation of Islam, you had Sunni Islam. And the communities were together in some regards, but they were also segregated. And as society changed, you had civil rights accomplishments. That divide grew wider because you had immigrant brothers and sisters who were legally white but socially nonwhite. And I think they leaned into what they thought were white was whiteness. But you still had Muslim gas station owners selling pork and alcohol to black folks. And I think that stirred a deep level of resentment. And I think there was a level of religiosity that betrayed what was happening on the ground. And so on one end, African American Muslim organizations were able to establish Islam through the lens of black Americans, which did a lot more. I think in terms of the reputation at the time than other immigrant groups, so that that tension is still there. I don't want to speak on behalf of Michiganders. But he acknowledged that tension very wisely, and I think he'll get past it. Chuck Todd: It's interesting that when I asked you about it, you went there. And yet we just saw in Wisconsin. That was more of an ideological fight. In the African-American community. Decidedly went against the progressive and went with Mr. Crowley. André Carson: I think a lot of the progressive rhetoric, you know, Malcolm X talked about, you know, being suspicious of the white liberal, right. So I think there's there's there's a sentiment there within the black community about the progressive talk where you see elected officials coming to cookouts, doing the electric slide boots on the ground, and then they get into office and they vote against the black communities interest. Those days are over. Chuck Todd: So this is just accumulated distrust. André Carson: Without question. That's why it's so many African-American males in particular went for Donald Trump. It was a sense of betrayal by the Democratic Party. Watch the full conversation on the Noosphere app

NEW: Dr. Abdul El-Sayed tells Chuck Todd what policies he could "imagine working with" President Trump on. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: At the end of day, I'll work with anybody if it means we can get money out of politics. Put money in your pocket and pass Medicare for all, doesn't mean I like him. Doesn't mean I agree with him on most things. But he's the president of the United States. If I'm a US senator in Michigan, my job is to figure out how to get some stuff done. Now, look, that's not going to change how I talk about a lot of the things he's done. Download the Noosphere app to watch the full conversation this Sunday

.Chuck Todd: Describe the issues you felt like you faced running as a Muslim. André Carson: I have to say this, Christian pastors were very welcoming. White evangelical pastors, certainly black pastors, let me in their pulpits. There were a group of pastors who met with me and said, you will never be allowed to speak in our pulpit because you're unfit, because of your I mean, they told me this because of my faith. I mean, it was hurtful at the time. Watch the full conversation on the Noosphere app

.Rand Paul: I'll tell you a story I haven't told many people. I was with [Trump] at Dover Air Force Base when soldiers were coming home. In the first administration. Soldiers had been killed in action. And, you know, people don't see this side of him, but it truly. He was moved, moved by the sadness of the situation, but also moved by... This is senseless. Why are we still there? Why are we in Afghanistan after 20 years? And he sincerely had this belief and I sincerely thought, this is not George W Bush. This is not. We're going everywhere to fight for freedom. We're going to liberate the world, and we'll perpetually be at war. This was someone who really saw the cost of war, and I think he truly believes that. But I don't understand how he's been so influenced by either Secretary Rubio or Lindsey Graham, but they have influenced him such that he's acting in a way contrary to what he used to say. Chuck Todd: Well the campaign trail in 2024 is littered with quotes from him and his surrogates saying, if you vote for Kamala Harris, that's a potential vote for a war with Iran. Rand Paul: Yeah, I don't get it. Download the Noosphere app to watch the full episode

Publicly, the Washington Post staff has “addressed Jeff Bezos, not Will Lewis. Why?” — Chuck Todd “Because it seems like he has the power to change it. It’s not my money, [Bezos] is where he is for a reason, but he’s got money and it’s like, if the money is the problem, why now? Why on this scale? “Why frankly, have you been paying people to run the paper who’ve made that problem worse?” — The Washington Post ‘s Chelsea Janes 🎧 Full conversation on Noosphere #SundayNightwithChuckTodd

.Chuck Todd: Can you be a Democrat in good standing right now, and be in favor of keeping trans women out of girls sports? Be supportive of the trans community. Be supportive of their rights, but be against the idea of trans women competing in women's. David Weigel: No, you need to be willing to make part of the party angry. That is the Amy Acton story, is that she has the pride caucus in the state, has protested that, Equality Ohio gave her an A rating and it downgraded that to pending. It's not off pending. We don't have much time left. No, you need to make a break with your party. And I don't want to make the 1 to 1 comparison. It's such a different issue, but the. How many Republicans are allowed to distance themselves to the party on abortion? Susan Collins basically. And that's that's it. And so in places where the party is beaten down and they haven't won in a long time, you're finding that enough Democrats are saying we don't agree with you. We think this is awful. But you got you got to say it to win the election in bluer states. They're not giving them that space and that. But that's a 2028 issue I think Democrats will just agonize over that in a couple of years. Watch the full conversation on the Noosphere app

Suzan DelBene: "I think I have always said that folks should talk directly to the folks who are running for office in their communities and ask them the tough questions about kind of their concerns about what's happening, whether it's about what's happening in the Middle East, what's happening economically, what they're seeing with ICE in communities and the war in Iran. Former VP Mike Pence: "I'm a Republican and what I can imagine is the Republican Party returning to our roots because they have been a pathway, not just a political success, but those policies and practices created the longest peacetime expansion in American history, literally brought down the Soviet Union, saw Roe v. Wade sent to the ash heap of history where it belongs and on and on and on and established the greatest military in the history of the world."
