Brother bonding, bear-style 🐻🐻 Did you know? Brown bears communicate by “gaping” or opening their jaw right in another bear’s face. It might look intense to us, but they use these behaviors to communicate their intentions and strengthen their bond. 💞 📸: Keeper Elizabeth

On Sunday, California Department of Fish and Wildlife brought 3 orphaned mountain lion cubs to Oakland Zoo’s vet hospital. The trio, estimated to be about 3 months old, were found in Portola Valley. CDFW believes the mother of these cubs is the same female mountain lion that was killed by a car in the same area. The three siblings (2 males and 1 female), are thin but relatively healthy. Their care team at our veterinary hospital has given them the names Thistle, Spruce, and Fern (Fern is the female). In the wild, mountain lion cubs need about two years with their mother in the wild to learn survival skills. Because these cubs are so young, they lack those skills and sadly cannot return to the wild. Instead, we will work with CDFW to find these cubs a new forever home at an appropriate institution. While they are with us, we will take great care of these orphaned cubs, and, we will continue to take action to reduce human-wildlife conflict and make our shared living spaces safer for all animals. Good morning sleepyheads! The brown bears have risen from their annual slumber (known as torpor) and can once again be seen swimming, wrestling, enjoying the sun, and generally being the big loveable floofs we love. The black bears are still sleeping but will be up soon 🐻

These silly boys and the black bears are entering torpor season, a winter sleep where they lower body temperature, heart rate, and metabolism to conserve energy. Though less visible from Nov-Mar, this supports their health and natural behaviors. 📸: Keeper Leslie

TBT to the recurring display of ferocity that rescued mountain lion cubs exhibit early in the rescue process. This sight indicates the cubs have energy to improve, and as their bonds with vets grow, behaviors like this dissipate. Who do you think was the most fierce?

The meerkat mob just got a little bit cuter! Sandy gave birth to her new pups in March and like a good meerkat mom, she kept them safely in the tunnels where the mob could easily keep an eye on them. The pups recently started emerging from the tunnels ready to explore! Father Chipe, mom Sandy, and siblings are doing a great job of keeping the pups warm and dry during our recent stormy weather. How many pups do you see in this video? 😍 📸 : Keeper Noelle

After everyone leaves the BBQ and there's a corn on the cob left 🌽 Sadly, it's no party for sun bears in the wild, who face shrinking habitats & illegal poaching. We're committed to combating illegal wildlife trade & promoting sustainable palm oil purchases! 📸: Keeper Marisa
