High Speed Electronics Not many people realise, but the high speed camera systems that filmed the dawn of the atomic age was actually integral to both the observer and the subject. What does that mean? Before Manhattan project, high speed cameras existed that could capture 1ms resolution. This was enough to record the experimental data that would eventually be used to design and construct an atomic bomb. High speed cameras could video bullets leaving gun barrels, so the optical and camera needs for the U-235 “gun method” experiments were easily met due to uranium 235’s “slow” critical insertion time of about 1 millisecond. However, a much faster photographic process was required for plutonium experiments because it is spontaneously fissionable due to its plutonium 240 isotope content. As a result, plutonium has a very fast critical insertion time of approximately 10 nanoseconds. A rotating drum camera was initially used to conduct implosion studies to design and construct an atomic bomb using plutonium. However, this camera was replaced in 1944 by a much faster rotating mirror camera with 10^-7 second resolution invented by Professor Mack. The Mack Streak Camera assisted in the design and perfection of a plutonium cylindrical implosion process with the assistance of Berlyn Brixner. Think about it. This was the process used in the Trinity test and in the Fat Man bomb dropped on Nagasaki. No camera, no bomb. In many endeavours across industry, the big breakthrough is gates behind many seemingly smaller side quests each one of which actually gates the primary objective. 2026 - Humanoids Robotics is moving very fast, because the prize is so large. This week we have seen a humanoid run 100m in 9.38 seconds (Usain Bolt can’t outrun them), they have done >2m standing jumps. Below they play tennis with better hand eye coordination than 99% of people. By 2030 the common humanoid will be faster, stronger and more coordinated than all humans. Athletics is having its Deep Blue moment… in China. Then can talk to each other at 5G data rates, they can pool their compute into a single brain. These robots cost $10-20,000 in China (the Unitree G1 has a “buy now” button on their website for $13,500), looking at these Games, it looks like the embodiment revolution has already started in China. Nobody has caught modern China in any sort of industrial or technological race before. Since the 90s China has always been fastest, but has almost always been behind. Here China is clearly ahead… and still going at China speed. Sitting around and talking about what to do, isn’t going to change much. A competitive ‘Sans Sino’ robot is the only thing that can displace China’s structural demographic and industrial advantages. Humanoids are an opportunity to rebuild your industrial base. It looks like some time before 2040 the main substrate of the global economy won’t be people. The thing needed for this to scale? Energy, or rather electricity, or as we should call it… exergy We need to build a high exergy, low entropy industrial base, currently nobody has one. Sounds weird, but if you understand these two words you know what I mean. Below is what the application layer of AI looks like in 2026, it’s not apps, or even screens. In fact peak screen time might be behind us. The next time this athletics event happens it’s going to start looking less human and more alien.

Engineering is the highest form of Art Below, a 60 year old Class 37 Locomotive caresses the topography of the Scottish Highlands yesterday afternoon. There are people out there who think art means the painting or drawing of these things, well there is some truth in that. But drawing these things before they even exist, is how engineers design them. Engineering means having the creativity to imagine and draw the thing out before it exists then also having the determination to actually go and build it, not as a dead ornament, but as a living thing that improves the lives of real people. You can then enjoy the satisfaction that you created it. You don’t create these things from nothing, but from your own efforts. If someone comes along later and paints a nice painting of your work, that’s great. But that’s not the highest form of Art (and we all know this tbh). Railway locomotives were invented and developed in Britain, part of this is down to the diverse geology of the British Isles which form an ancient uplifted geological outcrop that has been aggressively weathered by both the North Atlantic Ocean and repeated ice age glaciation. But mostly it was down to the ingenuity and tenacity of the people who got it done. All of modernity (which is built on industrial mechanisation) flows from these hills and the people who lived there back then. There’s something deeply spiritual about driving a train through these hills. In one sense the first locomotive was a glorified camp fire on wheels, in another sense it was our first step toward the stars.
