The momentum and positive position language of the backcourt rule has been referred to as ‘obscure’ several times over the past 24 hours. Although not a play seen often, the phrase positive position has been synonymous with momentum in NBA officiating and rules discussion with broadcasters, players, and coaches for years. NBA Referees are extensively trained on the rules and their real-time application – that’s our expertise. Media members are also offered extensive resources from the League to better learn the rules of our game, and Referees are always open to questions. Shout out to Bob Rathbun for immediately knowing this rule on his broadcast. Because media voices shape how fans understand the game, which is why accuracy matters. Accurate rules knowledge serves everyone.

#WalkItBackWednesday Lavine abandons the jump shot & launches toward Porter. This was correctly judged a no call as Porter jumps in front of Lavine & wouldn't have made contact had Lavine not abnormally launched himself to seek contact. Walk it back, Stacey King Adam Amin

One of the most misunderstood NBA rules is the gather step. This is an NBA-specific rule where players are allowed a ‘zero step’ when gathering the ball, which is different from amateur and international leagues. NBA Referees Evan Scott, David Guthrie and John Conley breakdown the gather step.

Another backcourt related play. Olynyk deflects the ball & causes the ball to be loose. Sabonis regains possession in front court, but his momentum brings him into the backcourt. Momentum applies anytime the ball is loose. By rule this is NOT a backcourt violation #MixedBagFriday

28-year NBA Referee Derek Richardson purchased an elementary school in Inglewood, California in 2022 – the same elementary school his children attended. Once the previous owners of the school were ready to sell, Richardson knew he had to step in before a developer purchased the coveted property centrally located in downtown Inglewood and demolished a piece of the community’s history. Now, the Dolores T. Richardson School, named after Derek’s mother, is again a thriving and growing hub of the urban community. We sat down with the current NBA Referee and school principal back in October during a dedication event for the newly founded school music program. Watch the full episode of Courtside to Classroom and learn more about where Derek’s deep passion for community service comes from and his plans for the elementary school’s future.
