Brand new vehicles for political campaigns, while Nigerian hospitals struggle without ambulances, schools lack basic facilities, and ordinary families struggle to survive. And this isn’t about Tinubu or one political party. It cuts across parties and regions. If the money can be found for political campaigns, why can’t some of it go toward hospitals, schools and communities that desperately need help? This is bigger than vehicles. It’s about priorities.

You can't be experiencing renewed sege and ignore free vegetable oil on the street. Nobody drives into a filling station in Yorubaland and gets cheaper fuel by singing “On Your Mandate” or shouting “Emi Lo Kan.” The pump will charge you the same price, whether you are a devoted supporter, a fierce critic, or a politically indifferent citizen. When hunger strikes, it does not ask who you voted for. When the bills arrive, they do not accept political slogans as payment. And when the rain falls, it does not spare anyone because of party affiliation. A mandate is not a meal. A slogan is not a salary. And blind loyalty will not put food on your table. The rain is falling on us all. The real question is: why should anyone be expected to celebrate the umbrella while still getting drenched?

Worse still, this reflects a deeper cultural malaise. While many parents fight with every fibre of their being to remain involved in their children's lives, this man, who aspired to become the Awujale of Ijebuland chooses instead to publicly mock his own offspring, a child who is simply a product of his own actions and recklessness.

Tinubu’s obsession with borrowing billions of dollars to build new “legacy” roads is not, in itself, a bad idea. Infrastructure is critical to Nigeria’s economic development. But there is a more immediate crisis that demands the President’s urgent attention. The deplorable condition of the majority of Nigeria’s federal roads is inflicting enormous hardship on Nigerians, destroying vehicles, driving up transport costs, disrupting businesses and, in many cases, costing lives. Before embarking on more grandiose road projects financed by billions in borrowed dollars, the President should declare a state of emergency on Nigeria’s existing roads. A government must not only build for the future; it must also fix the infrastructure that millions of citizens depend on today.
