For the Big Ben climax in 'The Great Mouse Detective', Disney wanted dynamic camera moves through Big Ben’s gears, but in 1986 there was no digital compositing. Solution? 3D wireframes plotted by literal ballpoint pen machines, xeroxed onto cels, hand-painted, then filmed with 2D characters layered on top. Animation is supposed to be about these creative innovations, not soulless shortcuts.
