John the Baptist, also known as the Forerunner, is one of the most venerated Saints in Christianity. Born to the righteous Zachariah and Elizabeth, his birth was foretold by an angel. Living an ascetic life in the wilderness, he wore clothing made of camel’s hair and ate locusts and wild honey. John preached repentance and the coming of the Messiah, baptizing people in the River Jordan as a sign of spiritual cleansing. He is best known for baptizing Jesus Christ, at which moment the heavens opened, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove, and the voice of God proclaimed Jesus as His beloved Son. For his bold condemnation of moral corruption, particularly King Herod’s unlawful marriage, John was imprisoned and later beheaded. In Christian tradition, he is honored as the last prophet of the Old Testament and the one who prepared the way for the Lord. His image is often depicted in Orthodox mosaics and icons, symbolizing prophecy, humility, and unwavering faith.
