We all condemned the criminal assault on activist @p_oruche at the Benin airport by people offended by her views. Most of us agree that in a democracy, speech is protected and jungle justice has no place, even when offense is caused. We said the same when Deborah was murdered for what she allegedly said in a student WhatsApp study group. Yet in the aftermath of the brutal assault and abduction of Don Pedro Obaseki, this was her contribution to the conversation. How is this ‘reasoning’ materially different from the logic used by those who insist that offensive speech justifies violence, including murder for blasphemy. If we cannot apply the same moral standard consistently, then a new Nigeria truly remains out of reach.

Love him or hate him, Wike will always speak his mind. Here he details how in 2023 they ‘used’ Obi to erode Atiku’s chances in traditional PDP strongholds. He might be overstating the effect they had on the final election results (why wasn’t this strategy used in Kaduna or Lagos, for instance?), but the strategy he claims they used is a well known one. I remember posting the video below warning people of the spoiler effect. It is Politics 101: a divided opposition favours the incumbent. Seems like we’re right back to square one, doesn’t it?

The most intelligent politician I’ve interacted with is Kingsley Moghalu OON. I watched him lecture Charles Anyiagolu in ARISE NEWS last night. He gets it. At this point it’s almost criminal that Tinubu isn’t at his door begging him for support. We used to have ‘philosopher-kings’, like Zik and Awo. These days we have barbarian warlords more interested in power than in progress.

This criminal act was not carried out in the Oba’s name. Don Pedro was abducted from a football field, stripped, and forcibly dragged to the Oba’s Palace. He was not “allowed” to wear knee pads by benevolent non-state actors. He had them on because he had been playing football. His abductors threatened to shoot him if anyone resisted. He was physically assaulted, stripped, and dragged through the city to the Palace gates. The Nigeria Police Force officers stepped aside and watched this happen. It was only the intervention of a palace chief that de-escalated the situation. In a democracy, there is no such thing as a compulsory “traditional apology.” More importantly, what offence is being alleged that could possibly justify the abuse, humiliation, and threats to life inflicted on him by known thugs? It is well.

We know the difference. I am happy to share INEC’s guidelines for election observers with you, if that will enrich the conversation. INEC Nigeria themselves are clear: they accredit only non-partisan domestic and international CSOs, the press, and representatives of foreign governments. They do not accredit individuals. Yet the Edo State APC Chairman claims his accreditation was obtained in his personal capacity as a Nigerian citizen (see the defence on his Facebook page, attached). He then goes on national television wearing a Tinubu cap and admits he was in Ekiti to advance a partisan agenda (see the TVC clip). Observer status grants unrestricted movement on election day. You truly cannot see the problem? INEC owes Nigerians a duty to address this issue. What accredited group did the APC Chairman belong to? Or was the picture he posted ‘clickbait’? Was he in effect impersonating an election observer?

The Edo election was clearly stolen by INEC. That’s settled. How do we start to rebuild trust in our electoral system? If you ask me, next steps must be: 1. The prosecution by ICPC Nigeria of the INEC Chairman under whose watch the Commission has gotten not only more incompetent but increasingly criminal; and 2. For the Judiciary to, as Sam Amadi encouraged, find the courage to reject election results that show clear manipulation. 3. Electoral reforms that increased the evidential weight of results held on IRev; and allow the use of the BVAS machines for accreditation and voting. We have to get back to the point where election riggers no longer believe the Courts are there to validate their crimes.
