My grandmother was a witness to this madness. On May 7, 1945, despite the surrender, German soldiers fired into a crowd of Dutch people celebrating on Dam Square in Amsterdam, who were waiting for Canadian troops to arrive. My grandmother is somewhere in these few reels. She told me she was pulled to safety by an older gentleman. She witnessed the woman holding the baby carrier (shown in the footage) being hit by several bullets. She described that the woman “exploded” in front of her. She also remembers that she was close or behind the barrel organ 't Snotneusje, which can also be seen in this footage. You can also see the baby carrier in the video reels.
