Hi neighbor. I've been asked why I still wear my wedding ring and the answer is simple: it still means everything to me. As you can see, I wear two. One Shirley and I chose together later in our marriage, and the other one was bought by her father, Red Foley, when I asked for his permission to marry his daughter. We were both just 19, and we didn't want to spend another day apart. So we got married the very next day – just two days before Red was moving the family to Springfield, MO, for the Ozark Jubilee. This little ring is the one that started it all. It represents a lifetime of love, faith, family, and a promise that doesn't end here on earth. Wherever Shirley is, and I believe she's in heaven, she still has hers. And one day, we'll be together again. Elvis and I? We were real friends. Back when both our careers were just getting started, someone asked Elvis if there were any male singers he liked. He said, “Pat Boone. Pat Boone is the best ballad singer of ‘em all.” That meant the world to me. When he came by our house on Sundays, with the whole Boone family out by the pool, he wasn’t Elvis the superstar. He was just a friend. And I think, deep down, he wanted a little of the quiet family life he saw in our backyard. I never envied Elvis. I loved him. I've been sitting here today thinking about my friend Elvis. I miss him, and I know many of you do too. Elvis and I spent time together over the years, and I remember him once telling me how much he wished he could go to church like I did. He worried that if he showed up, the whole service would be disrupted by people asking for autographs. I told him what I did when that happened, just tell the young folks you'll sign their church bulletins after the service, and then worship together first. Let the music and the fellowship come before anything else. Elvis had such a deep spiritual longing. In fact, he once asked me to help arrange a meeting with Oral Roberts, and they spent an afternoon talking together about faith. It meant a lot to him. Sometimes I think about how much Elvis loved the gospel music he grew up with, and how much he missed the simple joy of church fellowship. Hello, friends. It seems like America is in a civil war, an uncivil war, actually. Minute by minute, the news shows report what sounds like the total breakdown of our society. The Bible urges us in 1 Timothy 2:1-2 to pray for all people and all who are in authority; that we may lead quiet and peaceful lives marked by godliness and dignity. We may not always agree, but aren’t we neighbors and fellow citizens? God has the answer if we call on Him and ask for it.

Hello, friends. I’m sitting here quite moved as I watch the memorial service for my friend, Rev. Jesse Jackson. Years ago, on his Rainbow Coalition broadcast, his daughter Santita was interviewing me about my album We Are Family, where I had the joy of singing R&B classics alongside some of the greats. Jesse called in unexpectedly and said something I never forgot. He told his listeners in Chicago that he believed I helped bridge divides in the 1950s by honoring Black artists and their music, and by welcoming them as fellow performers and friends. I treasured that more than he ever knew. Today I honor him as a modern day apostle, motivated by the Holy Spirit, who lifted up generations with a simple, powerful truth: “I am somebody.” Rest in peace, my brother Jesse Jackson.

This old Bible is one of my most cherished companions. Sometimes I open it at random and find exactly what I need. Today, I landed on Psalm 28, and it felt like the perfect prayer: “I pray to you, O Lord, my rock… The Lord is my strength and my shield. I trust him with all my heart... I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.” I sure did burst out in song, and I hope you do too. The Word of God speaks to all of us. Well now, here's a chapter of my life some folks may not know about. I helped start the ABA, the American Basketball Association, and I was the only entertainer involved. I owned the Oakland Oaks, and by God's grace we won the championship our second year with the great Rick Barry. I was proud as could be. But I'll tell you something else. When the ABA struggled, it nearly took me down with it. I was funding the team myself after my partner went bankrupt. We won a championship, and then I was staring at financial ruin. And then, almost miraculously, a gentleman flew in from Washington, D.C., walked into the Bank of America, and bought the team. That moment changed everything for me. Now Amazon has released a new docuseries, "Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association," telling the story of the rise and fall of the ABA and how it eventually merged with the NBA. It was the wild, colorful beginning of something that reshaped professional basketball forever. I'm grateful I got to be part of that history. When I was a young man, I thought I knew what success would look like. Maybe it meant being a star quarterback or becoming a teacher preacher. But life, and the Lord, had other plans. Hi neighbor. I was looking through some old photographs today and came across this one of Shirley and me when we were just 18 years old. We were already in love and graduating from high school. Shirley was the Homecoming Queen, and somehow I was voted "Bachelor of Ugliness." I never quite figured out why that was supposed to be an honor, but it meant we got to stand together for the celebration! Little did we know that just a year after this picture was taken we'd be married, and before long we'd be on our way to raising four beautiful girls. But in that moment we were simply young, happy, and wonderfully in love.
