They were about 10 miles from a thunderstorm when they heard clicking and saw blue electrical arcs coming from the boat’s metal rod holders. They were even getting shocked touching the metal. That’s St. Elmo’s Fire — a corona discharge caused by a strong electric field around the storm. It’s fascinating to see and hear, but also a warning: the atmosphere is highly electrically charged.
