They were about 10 miles from a thunderstorm when they heard clicking and saw blue electrical arcs coming from the boat’s metal rod holders. They were even getting shocked touching the metal. That’s St. Elmo’s Fire — a corona discharge caused by a strong electric field around the storm. It’s fascinating to see and hear, but also a warning: the atmosphere is highly electrically charged. On a boat, that’s not something you want to hang around and watch. At all. They did the right thing and headed back in at max speed and away from the thunderstorm!📷Scott Gilligan #Florida
