By day, it looks like any other mushroom. But once the sun sets, Omphalotus nidiformis,—also known as the ghost fungus–illuminates. Native to Australia, this bioluminescent mushroom emits a beautiful green glow that can light up the forest floor. The glow comes from an enzyme called luciferase, the same chemical reaction seen in fireflies. It’s believed the ghost fungus uses this light to attract insects, helping it spread its spores after dark. 📹: Australian Geographic and Filippo Rivetti

An amazing sighting of the Gyroporus cyanescens by Mycohuman and Partial Veil! Watch as this beautiful fungi reacts to being cut, instantly blueing on contact! Known for its vibrant blue reaction, this mushroom is often referred to as the bluing bolete. Found in hardwood forests, it’s a distinctive species in the bolete family. This is NOT a psilocybin mushroom.

What an amazing spore release of a Cookeina mushroom captured by @ _solivgant on Instagram. This genus of cup fungi, found in tropical and subtropical regions, features deep, funnel-shaped fruiting bodies with a brightly colored spore-bearing surface. The spores are released into the air, helping propagate the species. The outer surface is less vibrant, and the excipulum (the tissue making up the walls) is thin and flexible. Fascinating, right?

A wonderful time lapse of the Stinkhorn mushroom. They are a wide and diffuse family of fungi with many subtypes and amazing appearances that often look otherworldly. True to its name, the Stinkhorn emanates a strong odor and it is often said you can smell them before you see them! 📹: The Mushroom Club

Sometimes I get random emails which blow my myco-mind, and this one stands out from a passionate mycologist from the U.K. I suspect a polypore has made this high tensile strength mycelial sheath, possibly a Ganoderma or Heterobasidion. Thank you to “this amateur mycologist bloke on Islay what made this video”
