It’s New Years Eve but I was up and out early to catch up with my old friend, Foggy. I wish you all a very Happy New Year, but also spare a thought for all those who will struggle to enjoy it for whatever reason.

Thanks to you all who still follow me. I’ll update you about my move as soon as it’s settled, but in the meantime, this happened.

I was a bit down and tired at work today after my 79 year old Mum fell and badly broke her pelvis yesterday. An hour and forty minutes lying on the pavement in torrential rain for an ambulance. What the hell!? The awesome Henry and a lovely visit took my mind off it though.

Day off for me but it seems the lurgy is doing the rounds at the farm. Poor Sal B has a poorly child and she feels rough too so I offered to go and muck her horse, Finn out for her.

Foggy having his bedtime carrot in the early hours of this morning. I can’t say any of us Policed without fear yesterday, but we Policed it nevertheless. None more so than our four legged friends. Thanks big guy. 💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I’m not gonna lie, we all had a deep sense of foreboding all morning yesterday. By the second photo we’d got into an “in it together” spirit for what lay ahead. What did lay ahead was a great policing operation with few issues so we had some much-needed light relief.

Foggy has a bit of saddle-sore from that long, violent clash in Rotherham last Sunday so I’ll be paired up with Big Henry today to give Foggy time to heal. We’re all hoping it’s a peaceful day as we head out to police more protests.

I do question my own sanity sometimes as I’m balancing my phone on something to film what is a very mundane task for people on Twitter that I don’t even know. It’s these everyday moments though that people never get to see, but are actually some of the most rewarding.

1. An anxious Treeton arriving at his new home.

‼️ATTENTION‼️we’re selling this lovely guy. He’s so friendly, great jumper, polite, and with a kind, inquisitive disposition. He’s proved himself safe everywhere except big city centres, where he just gets a bit stressed. A diamond of a horse though.

It’s been months since I’ve seen the fellas so I just wandered down, asking nothing and expecting nothing. What a welcome! Sully Foggy Moose Woody. 💙

I saved the most important “mint” ‘til last. Foggy got us into, and out of, some very dangerous situations during the violence in Rotherham. I say “us” because he led the team and gave the other horses confidence to go forward… a true hero in my opinion. Sore healing up nicely.

Well it’s been a long time coming but my old partner in crime, Treeton, is finally retiring very soon. We’ve found a lovely place in Barnsley where he can just relax in the green pastures and put his hooves up. He’s earned it.

“Overwhelmed” is a word that’s often overused, but I really am. I’ll read and reply to everyone as soon as I can but thank you all so much! I’m not done quite yet though so for now the horse-posts will keep coming. Enjoy the slow rhythm of Handsome Henry’s hooves.

1. Saying bye to Treeton. It’s been a week since I left the department and I’ve shed more tears than a grown man should about something so relatively trivial. South Yorkshire Police, or more specifically the people who work within it, have been absolutely amazing.

A cheesy montage of the first sparks of interest in joining Mounted, right through to passing the course in 2018. The best people, the best horses, and the best (but hardest) course. What a ride!

Head rub for Henry. The low, relaxed, trusting head of a horse you know so well and care for. You feel it. To your core you feel it. I’ll miss these moments the most. I’m not leaving X, and will be back to see them when I can. Enjoy your Sunday. 💙

A Tribute to Treeton. From all who rode him. From all he kept safe. From all who got “that look” off him. From us all… THANK YOU. Happy retirement big guy, you’ve definitely earned it.

Friday night extra: While I climbed over the fence to get some carrots out of the car, disorder broke out between Woody and Sully. Never off duty, Foggy policed the situation and split them up. Moose just stood there hoping for a shoulder scratch.

A collection of the smiles we’ve helped put on people’s faces, some of whom had little cause to. It’s not just “PR” or simple “engagement”… it’s emotions and memories that last a lifetime. I really enjoyed putting this one together for that very reason.
