One of the greatest live-TV mistakes in sports broadcasting history. It's 2007. ESPN's Rob Stone is doing a pregame spot at New Mexico State's Chile Pepper Institute before Nevada vs. New Mexico State. His host holds up a tiny pepper: "This is the Bhut Jolokia, the world's hottest chili pepper." Stone bites it before the sentence is even finished. Then comes the fine print: "A million Scoville heat units." Stone: "What does that mean?" He finds out fast. The milk doesn't help ("I don't even taste the milk"), and then he asks the question every viewer is asking: "How long is this gonna last?" The answer: "For some people, five, six hours." The outrage machine has a new target, and his name is Shane Gillis. Gillis hosted Saturday Night Live on Oct. 10. In his monologue he talked about his weight, going back to the gym, and roasting his own family. One joke about what women wear to the gym, "I didn't know women just dress like whores now," set off the online mob. Critics are calling it misogynistic. CNN reports SNL is staying quiet. Here's the thing: this is a comedian, doing stand-up, on a comedy show. He's crude. He's always been crude. That's exactly why millions of people pay to see him. The same crowd that cheers "edgy" comedy when it punches right suddenly discovers its fainting couch when a guy from Pennsylvania jokes about gym shorts. You don't have to like the joke. You don't have to laugh. But the moment we decide comedians need permission from the internet to tell jokes, comedy is dead. Here's the whole set.
