But Scripture was received, not self-generated. The Church didn’t come from the Bible. This song tells his story the way it deserves to be told: as a Western-style martyr’s ballad, a tale of a boy who refused to betray Christ, who walked through dust and blood with unshakable resolve, and whose final words became a battle cry echoing through generations: “¡Viva Cristo Rey!” During the Cristero War, when the Mexican government outlawed the Church and tried to silence the faith, José stepped forward and said: “I am His, whatever comes my way.” He gave up his horse so another could escape.
