New from PocketJS: quickjs-oxide. A JavaScript interpreter modeled after QuickJS, implemented from scratch by AI in Rust with zero unsafe code, and the first of its kind to achieve performance competitive with the original QuickJS. We spent one month achieving a high Test262 pass rate, then another month cleaning up the code, getting rid of the AI slop, and reaching competitive performance with just a stack VM and reference counting. Over the last weekend at RustChinaConf, we rewrote the core into a register VM and achieved this level of performance in just two days. Now quickjs-oxide outperforms most non-JIT JavaScript engines on benchmarks like V8 v7 and the Octane suite, using only around 30% more memory than QuickJS, while maintaining zero lines of unsafe implementation code and no external dependencies except for BigInt support. Huge credit to Ericoolen for making this happen, and massive thanks to our sponsor Zephyr Cloud for supporting the journey!

Testing Pocket3D on PS Vita at 60FPS with the native GXM 3D backend. No video streaming. Everything runs locally on the device, with Pocket3D built to squeeze the most out of native hardware. More coming soon.

PocketJS 0.12.0 is out! While following PSPMAN by Obsolete Sony, we noticed a CJK text-loading case we could improve. Apps can now keep a skeleton until the full text is ready, then draw it all at once, making dynamic UIs like music players feel much cleaner.

PocketJS now runs on the Meizu M8, a 2009 Chinese phone built on Windows CE 6. At the dawn of the iPhone era, Meizu built a remarkably modern touch experience over an older embedded OS. It was a brief branch of mobile history. Porting PocketJS here let us see how it worked.

Pocket DS update: dual-screen support and virtualized lists are working. 10,000 contacts, smooth scrolling, on a Nintendo 3DS 🙌 We’ve also added a React Native style hot-reload workflow, so JavaScript can be pushed directly to the 3DS during development.

Challenge accepted. PocketJS now has the core interaction primitives behind this: gesture-driven, interruptible transitions, with JavaScript controlling every frame. Running smoothly on iPod touch 4 with a single-core 800 MHz A4, tens of times slower than a modern iPhone.

We gave an ESP32-P4 its own app ecosystem. Just 2×360MHz CPU cores and 32MB PSRAM. No GPU. No Android or Linux. Yet this MCU now has a smooth home screen, installable apps, and modern online services. With PocketJS, we build Pocket Applets to make this happen.

We've admired yui540's motion work for a long time, so we ported it frame for frame to PocketJS on Sony PSP! Powered by our new animation engine that compiles Tailwind keyframes into binary timelines, plus a 3D pipeline for perspective, cubes and page flips. ⚡️

Yes, you can now play the Nintendo Pokémon as a native Sony PSP game! This is done by our new Rust runtime referencing the awesome Lua Voxel mod (by DramaticShape) and the gen1recomp project.

We strongly believe in this too. That’s why we compressed Omarchy’s signature tiling window UX down to a Nintendo 3DS, and it still runs smoothly.

ModRetro is great hardware at $200. For the same price, you can get a Nintendo 3DS + Sony PSP and use PocketJS to create 3D games and apps on both, not just retro 2D experiences. We want to revive old hardware and make it a platform for modern software again.
