In 1955, a man in Iran became one of the most hauntingly documented cases of human rabies in medical history. He had been bitten by a rabid wolf during an outbreak in Sahneh, Iran. Once the rabies virus reached his nervous system and symptoms began, there was essentially nothing medicine could do. His illness was filmed as it progressed, documenting the terrifying neurological deterioration caused by rabies, until his death. Rabies is almost 100% fatal once clinical symptoms appear. But here is the crucial lesson: rabies is preventable if post-exposure treatment is given before symptoms begin. After a potentially rabid animal bite or exposure, don’t wait for symptoms. Seek medical attention immediately. Once rabies reaches the brain, it is almost always too late.
