there’s a huge difference between watching someone ski a cliff and actually standing at the top of one. from the camera angle it looks almost manageable, but 80 FEET OF EMPTY SPACE changes the whole thing. you have to commit, stay composed through the drop and trust that you’ve judged the landing correctly. i can understand why people watch this and immediately think “yeah… absolutely not.”

this skier was swept away by an avalanche while skiing in italy's mont blanc massif. three french freeriders witnessed it happen, rushed to his rescue, and called for help. he was carried nearly 300 meters and even went over a 50-meter cliff, but after deploying his avalanche airbag, he miraculously survived with injuries to his ribs and leg.
