this skier was swept away by an avalanche while skiing in italy's mont blanc massif. three french freeriders witnessed it happen, rushed to his rescue, and called for help. he was carried nearly 300 meters and even went over a 50-meter cliff, but after deploying his avalanche airbag, he miraculously survived with injuries to his ribs and leg.

Fred Syversen had about ten metres of snow left when he realised he had taken the wrong chute. It was March 2008 in the Swiss Alps. The Norwegian freerider was on a heli-filmed warm-up run after studying the face from above and memorising landmarks. The problem was brutally simple: two rocks on the mountain looked almost identical. He passed the wrong one, entered a narrow gully and only understood the mistake when the snow suddenly ended in front of him. By then he was moving too fast to stop. Syversen later said trying to brake was no longer an option. So he made a slight turn to keep away from rocks on his left and went off the edge with his skis still running. The drop was later measured at 107 metres. The film crew said he was in the air for about five seconds. As the air pushed his ski tips up, he let his body come back rather than fighting to stay upright. He also wrote that the metal bottle in his ABS avalanche pack sat near his lower back, so just before impact he shifted slightly onto his left side. That is the part I keep watching. Not because anyone should copy it, but because it shows how quickly a mountain can take choices away. On steep, blind terrain, line recognition is part of skiing technique. By the time Syversen saw the cliff, the important navigation error had already happened metres earlier. All he could do then was stay clear enough to manage what came next. He hit deep snow and disappeared into it. The film crew reached him and dug him out within minutes. He had survived a 107-metre fall from a cliff he had never intended to jump. There is nothing casual about this clip. Syversen had prepared the line, but one almost identical landmark changed everything. His own account describes a chain of tiny decisions made under pressure: do not panic, do not try to stop when stopping is gone, avoid the rocks, prepare for the impact. The number everyone remembers is 107 metres. The detail that stays with me is smaller: two similar rocks, one wrong turn, ten metres of snow, and a skier who still had to make one last correct decision
