Delhi Police is stopping ordinary citizens from gathering or protesting, citing Section 163 of the BNSS. But Hindutva groups are gathering openly and threatening protesters. They claim the protesters are raising anti-India slogans. I have covered these protests and haven’t witnessed this. And frankly, this is an old tactic. Nothing new here. So I asked Delhi Police a simple question: if ordinary citizens aren’t allowed to gather, how are these groups allowed to assemble and openly threaten protesters? They had no answer.

This evening at Kartavya Path, where a lamp-lighting ceremony was being held to celebrate PM Modi’s birthday, led by Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, I spotted several schoolchildren in uniform. I spoke to some of them. They told me their schools had directed them to attend the event, even though their exams are currently going on. I also asked their teachers about it. I was told that the NDMC had directed the schools to send students to the ceremony. So, apparently, when exams are underway, lighting lamps and celebrating the Prime Minister’s birthday takes priority. What a reflection of the education system we have built. #HappyBdayPMModi

This is why I still don’t trust The Indian Express, even after the Ritika Chopra story. That was a commendable investigation, no doubt. Look at today’s front page and you will understand the problem. Yesterday’s peaceful protest in Delhi saw police dragging protesters, including women. A policeman was even seen slapping a Gen Z protester. That should have been the big front-page story. Instead, the headline gives CJP prominence and the police action gets pushed into the background. The people actually on the ground, including Neha Bora and NSUI protesters, barely get the attention they deserve. And the story is pushed to page four. This is exactly why I still have my doubts about The Indian Express .

This is a Vinod Jakhar appreciation post. Just like Neha Bora, I have seen Vinod fighting on the streets. I have seen him getting detained, manhandled and bruised. He is out there every single day, fighting for the right causes and showing up wherever people need support. That’s what I have seen him do, time and again. Even before these protests, he was at Satya Niketan, participating in rescue efforts. I also saw him at Sunlight Colony Police Station, where protesters had gathered to demand justice for Chongtham Vikram Singh, the Manipuri musician beaten to death in Delhi’s Kilokari area. Vinod was there too, standing with the people and fighting for justice. Leadership is about showing up when it matters, standing with people and fighting for what is right, even when it comes at a cost. And I have seen Vinod Jakhar do exactly that, time and again. Respect. P.S. Someone please gift the poor chap a shirt. Don’t know if Delhi Police ever returned his. 🤣 VINOD JAKHAR

Neha Bora is not giving up. What a leader. What I have seen at Jantar Mantar road today is genuinely so inspiring. She just keeps going. Delhi Police tried to detain her multiple times and failed every time. I will write a longer post about her later, but for now, just this: respect. Neha

What happened in Jamui, Bihar is enough to make anyone furious. Those men picked a girl up and tried to carry her away from her friend. Watching that video, it was painfully clear what they were trying to do. But what made me even angrier were the reactions on social media. Instead of asking why those men did it, people started asking: Why was she out at night? Why was she with a boy? What was she wearing? A woman being outside at night, with a male friend, or wearing clothes you do not approve of is NOT an invitation to rape. And she wasn’t even wearing any revealing clothes. She can wear whatever she wants. The men who attacked her are guilty. And people who instinctively blame the woman instead of the attackers are defending the very mindset that enables sexual violence.

Another gem from Pranit More. This man is pure filth. The fact that people find this funny is disturbing enough, but the audience laughing along and cheering it on makes it even worse. And seeing women in the crowd actively participating in this spectacle is honestly baffling. This isn’t humour, it’s gutter-level garbage being applauded as entertainment.

Bihar is battling massive floods, but at Kartavya Path today, I met a Bihari supporter of PM Modi who had a different perspective. I asked him: Bihar is inundated, people have lost homes and livestock, many are struggling for food. At a time like this, was a grand birthday celebration really necessary? His answer was simple: Yes, it was necessary. Floods happen every year. No one is dying, he said, and we cannot stop living just because there are floods. He compared it to celebrating our children’s birthdays even when life has problems. So according to him, we should celebrate the Prime Minister’s birthday too. Mumbai has seen some violent incidents on its local trains in recent weeks. One man was murdered inside a moving train with a knife, while another passenger was attacked with a sickle after a seat dispute. Now, a Lokmat Times sting has exposed a shocking security lapse in the Mumbai Metro. One might argue that such lapses are harder to prevent across Mumbai’s vast suburban rail network, but there is no excuse for them in the Metro. A reporter carried a knife through a security checkpoint to test the system, yet the weapon passed through both the metal detector and the baggage scanner without being flagged or questioned. The new Parliament building is hideous, and it seems common sense was nowhere in the design process.
