Princeton University, chartered in 1746, has played a significant role in the founding of our nation and the Garden State. Nassau Hall was the site of the state legislature’s inaugural meeting on Aug. 27, 1776, where its members elected the state’s first governor, William Livingston, and convened on campus through November. Princeton researchers have cleared a major hurdle toward the advent of practical quantum computing by developing a new kind of superconducting qubit that improves quantum coherence time by 15 times that of industry standards. The new qubit design is similar to those already used by leading companies like Google and IBM, and could easily be slotted into existing processors, according to the researchers. The importance of deep reading and critical thinking as our brains adapt to digital distractions and information overload is the subject of this year’s Princeton Pre-read book, “Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World” by Maryanne Wolf. The Pre-read is a Princeton tradition started by President Eisgruber, who introduces first-year students to intellectual life on campus by selecting a book to read and discuss together. "'Reader, Come Home' addresses beautifully and persuasively what may be the single most important question for incoming students at Princeton University, why should we continue to read long, demanding books when short summaries are easily obtained?"
